What tethering speeds are you getting?

When I tether my phone to the laptop is says 'now connected 500.00Kbps' yet when I run a 3G speed test I regularly get 1-2 Mbps speeds, why is the Usb link to the phone limiting the connection speed to only 500.Kbps?
