Looks pretty damn nifty... I've been considering getting the older version, but may hold off for this one

Any word on when this is out? Harvey Norman have an Iomega 1TB media player for €180, so if the WD isn't out soon I might just go with the Iomega.

I wouldn't waste your money on the Iomega, either wait for the WD2 or look at one of the NMT devices - Popcorn Hour, iStar, eGreat etc.

Komplett say they'll have them in a couple of days. They've been saying that for a while now seemingly so tread carefully.

This is so close to completing the ideal setup for me but it's lacking in one thing. Why did they restrict the internet to YouTube, live365, Flickr and Pandora? And Pandora only works in the US now. For me this is the only weak point. Would like to get the RTE real player and stream KCRW radio which is not on Live365 (and more). Other than that... what a box for the buck!!!

Might we see third party firmwares for these? Were there some for the last version.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what exactly can this do??

Can it play any of my media files I have on my hard drive on my TV?

If so, how good does the quality of the file have to be to come out good on a TV?

Would a 700mb film or 350mb (~40min) TV show be good enough?

    Thanks

Yep. It plays videos, music and photos. They say it can handle practically every type of video except for apple/itunes movies.

Has a hdmi output and is capable of 1080p full HD streaming.

The quality depends on a couple of things,

What do you call good/bad quality?
What kind of tv would you be viewing them on? Larger tvs would make bad videos look worse.
The quality of the source material.

If you have a pc/laptop with a composite video out, plug that into your tv to see what it's like.

    Shame.

Asa far as I know it doesn't. Seems to only have youtube, live365, pandora and flickr.

    3rd party firmwares??

Yep, should play just about anything. There are very few common video formats it won't play. RM/RMVB is about the only one I can think of, and that is only popular in China anyway.

700MB Xvids are pretty low quality, miles below commerical DVDs even, and that will show up on a large high-def TV. Pixellation and colour banding etc will be pretty visible.

But that's just the nature of your material, the WD will play whatever you throw at it and make the best of it. It supports the MKV container which is commonly used for higher quality x264-based videos.

Did you order it from Komplett?

    Can you test it with "MKV's" and "x264, 720p .avi's" ?

Yep, from Komplett. Delivered on day 3. All good.

Any chance you could give me a link to a sample file. I don't have the type of files you suggest.

I have played 1080p 25fps files that I recorded on a camcorder from my NAS drive over a wired connection with no problem what so ever.

Some of the problems that the box is having are mainly network related. I have a small collection of various divx/avi movies. When streaming from the NAS drive there is no audio on some of the movies but, when I play them from a local usb drive they are fine. Also, the box is having trouble with the thumbnails for movies over the network. Once again work fine on local usb.

Locally over USB it's played everything I've thorwn at it so far.

Good box though. Will be better very soon with a 3rd party firmware that's being cooked up. I have the trial version on my box and goign good.

    Theres three models :
WD TV Mini (very basic, only old formats and no HD)

WD TV - Has HDMI and supports all the high-def formats, MKV etc

WD TV Live - Same as the WD TV except with networking and some youtube features etc.
