Nice. I cancelled and they were turned off. No real loss as most of what I watched seem to be shown free at some stage.

I am in the same boat - should it transfer over? I haven't been charged yet anyway and still have channels too.

I cancelled in June by sending two emails. Got auto reply saying they got the email and thanks...Also said if the request was to do with cancelling the account no more was needed...Nothing taken out for July/August but channels still there..
Checked the credit card this morning and EUR21.99 was taken out. Rang "Customer Service"..Yeah right and was told they have NO email sent to cancel the account:mad::mad: And now I should write a letter to them but she doesnt hold out much hope of getting my money back:mad:
Morale of story...Any body still getting Setanta after cancelling account..Check credit card/Bank a/c NOW...

Exact same here. How do I get in touch with them? Tried ringing, no answer.

21.99 gone out of my account too, despite the fact I'm supposed to be paying the 5 euro a month reduced offer.
Thats the final straw,I'm getting rid of it now, sick to death of them debiting incorrect amounts and having to chase after them.

Jeez, I had an annual payment with Setanta but changed it to Monthly @ €5 for August and Septemeber and have it on second box for free for the year. After seeing your comments I just did a quick look at my account and phew! €5 is all the they took.

BTW - don't know if this is the place to say it but you guys will let me know anyway - are Sky showing NFL this year or have ESPN taken it ?

€5 was taken off my card. Think I got the previous two months free. Must call them to see when the €5 deal ends as I am cancelling after that!

Thanks JeanClaude. I read the whole lot and can't believe what I was reading. But at least its not all lost I suppose.

Got through to Setanta. Spoke to a decent enough chap. Told them Id been charged even though I cancelled months ago. I still have the service. He put through my cancellation which will take effect 1st October. Told me to contact customerservice@setanta.com if I wanted to try and get a refund of my last payment. He never attempted to give me a cheap offer to stay on or anything like that unfortunately.

Same story here. I cancelled via the website back in June. When I didn't get billed in July and August (and lost access to the service too) I naturally assumed that I'd hear no more about it.

But lo and behold, there's a 21.99 charge on this month's credit card.

I got a similar story from the call centre that others are getting:

My cancellation request in June was never received apparently and the charge on this month's credit card was for July, when no credit card bills were issued. My charges for August (also 21.99) and September (16.99) would be taken shortly.

    "But I've cancelled" I protested.
"Oh no you haven't" they replied.
"Then why am I not getting service?" I asked.

The reason for this appeared to be that my Setanta service was on an old card attached to a cancelled sub. And I'd moved house since then. Setanta suggested that according to their records, a new card had possibly been issued to the old address. But no one could confirm that.

Their initial offer was to cancel my service before the 16.99 charge for September would be taken, thus leaving me two 21.99 payments to pay.

    I politely refused.

They eventually agreed to waive the next 21.99 charge for August, leaving me with 21.99 to pay for July. Which I agreed to on the basis that the cancellation notice period was 30 days and it was late June when I cancelled (and also, the call cost was mounting up, and tempers on both sides were getting frayed).

But jeezo, they make it hard work. The initial CSR (Margaret) was quite charming but wasn't authorised to actually do anything to help me. Her manager (can't remember his name) fought his corner well / was a bit arsey (delete as applicable). According to him, my call is the first complaint they've ever received that a web cancellation request hadn't been followed up on. Hmmm...

Their claim that the reason bills weren't taken in July / Aug was due to an office move following the collapse of the UK operation may well be true, but a cynic might suggest that not billing people for 2 months while you sort your **** out is a great way to stop them cancelling your service.

In summary, you'll have a fight on your hands if you want Setanta to stop charging you for a service you thought you'd cancelled months ago. But if you argue you case forcefully, making your point again and again and again, only raising your voice when absolutely necessary, you should be able to get some of the more ridiculous charges waived.

i cancelled late july. waited for the last payment to come out, then i cancelled the direct debit. got a snotty letter from them today saying "we've been informed by your bank that you've cancelled..yadda ya.. should you require to cancel 30 days notice blah blah"

when i cancelled I asked the guy on the end of the phone to send me a confirmation that i've cancelled, either by post or by email. He said he cant, but all calls are recorded so it's on record. what bs.

so i'm just going to ignore it. is that the best course of action or should i phone them up?

just to let you's know, I just called Setanta to cancel and they offered me €9.99 per month for the next three months. That will do me.

    I was offered €5 a month for 3 months

Likewise here. I just wanted to get as far away as possible from that bunch. I took advantage of an offer from them last summer just before they went to the wall for €10.99 p/m for the next six mths, which I took them up on. The next month they went bust and I attempted to cancel but they offered me €5 for three mths until they got their affairs sorted. Again I agreed to this. Low and behold the next month €21.99 came out of the bank account. Rang them up and they told me the €10 deal was with a different company and the €5 deal did not kick in till the following month! Needless to say that was the final straw! Not that easy to get out of either!

Are many others continuing to subscribe to Setanta? Their new offer of €16.99 p/m is hardly the bargan of the year given that their portfolio is significantly weakened and they have approx 9 channels less than they had when they charged €21. Also is there any justification for them keeping Setanta 1? Rare occasion that they have two live events clashing. I assume it is way to justify a higher sub.:(

Im trying to leave at the moment too. Some day soon I'll be free:). It really isnt worth €16.99. A tenner would be more than enough.

I sent them an cancellation email on 22nd June, and got this:

"On 23 June 2009, Neville Kahn, Lee Manning and Nick Edwards were appointed Joint Administrators of the Companies and now manage the affairs, business and property of Setanta Sport Limited and Setanta Transmissions (UK) Limited and Setanta Sports S.a.r.l.. The Joint Administrators contract as agents of the Companies and without personal liability

Setanta Sports Customers from England, Wales or Scotland please be advised that Setanta Sports GB is no longer trading. Setanta Sports is still operating in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, USA, Canada , Australia and Africa. Customers from ROI and NI should go to www.setanta.com/ie for more information."

If your email is regarding a cancellation enquiry, please be advised that you do not need to take any further action."

I asked them for confirmation, and got the same reply. So I thought nothing off it.

as it states "If your email is regarding a cancellation enquiry, please be advised that you do not need to take any further action."

    I got billed too.

I have a number of friends in the north getting charged 9.99, even after they had cancelled aswell.. maybe ring watchdog! :)

I got July, August & Sept for €5 a month. Was told that my sub would revert to the full charge with effect from 26th Sept. Will be interesting what I'll be billed when cc bill comes around 10th of next month.

I don't know about banking law in the six counties or England,Scotland,Wales.
In the Republic of Ireland once You have given the correct notice to a service provider that you no longer want its service You should then imeadiatly let your bank know that they no longer have your permission to make any payments by credit card or direct debit to the provider beyond that date.If they do You are entitled to a full refund of overpayments from your bank.

My advise would be to cancel DD with your bank immediatly. They will continue to take the money unless you cancel the service by phone. Any deal or notification given to Setanta around time of liquidation is worthless at this stage. They will claim that a new company has now been formed. I have been stung by them in this way also. At least if you cancel payments they will have to engage with you instead of you trying to chase them and getting pushed from pillar to post with various laws etc.while they continue to take payments from your account.

    Sod's law...

Despite the call centre manager guy I spoke to last month assuring me that my account was cancelled and that I'd not be charged anymore, the feckers have applied two €16.99 charges to my account since then.

Has there ever been a worse company in the history of the planet than fecking Setanta?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 983 ✭✭✭Qprmeath

The call centre told me the charges applied were for the months they missed out charging me after the Uk operation went belly up.. June July August I think. They also charged me on the day they disconnected me even though I thought you paid in advance for each month. I lost all will to argue with them. I asked them for confirmation that they definitely wont charge me again but they refused stating they cant give out "my" details. Their service is awful. 16.99 is far too much for what they show anyway.
