Do I have to pay for additional work done I didn't request?

    Hi all,

I have a small sailing dingy that was in need of a repair. So I asked a boat repair specialist to repair the hole that it had.
They did that and they did do some additional work I hadn't asked them to do i.e. they painted the whole underside of the boat...

    Question:
Do I have to pay for the work I didn't ask them to do?

    Note:
I have no problem paying for the work I asked them to do...

    Cheers,
    Knuger

In general I'd say no but it would depend on how they argue it as well. They could for example claim that as part of fixing the hole they need to paint it and to ensure it looks ok they need to paint the whole bottom to match.

Don't know a whole lot about boats, but I'd have thought so too. Just repairing the hole and not painting it would only have been half a job. You wouldn't expect, say, a car repair place to bash out a dent in a wing, and leave the area unpainted.

i would say if the painting was going to in some way compliment the repair by maybe making it waterproof or in some way sealing it then i would think it was part of the repair job but i would not think this necessary on boats depending on the material the boat is made from.

Did you get any type of quote for the work in advance? or was it just a request to "fix the boat"?

They should detail everything. I would not expect it painted unless I asked, since I might have gone elsewhere to get that bit done.

I don't know enough about boats but surely the OP got a quote in the first place? If they set about increasing this they should of course contact you.

I think that this is a good analogy. But there is also the argument that the op didn't request the additional work and should have been told first about it to agree to it or not. In this case I'd make that point to the repairer and request a discount.

having repaired many dinghies in my life I can say that painting the whole hull is doing a great job, but it's certainly not required. the painting could be feathered into the existing paint quite well, though it's unlikely the colours would match.

If you didn't ask, or it wasn't stated in the original quote for the work then don't pay.

Actually, I wouldn't expect them to paint the whole car after a small repair, unless I requested it. Same thing in this case with the boat, I'd not pay for unnecessary work, that wasn't requested.
