NCB Issue

My insurance is up next week and my current broker (AA Insurance) couldnt match a price I got elsewhere online. I asked for the no claims bonus cert and it said I only had 3 years NCB (despite me not having a claim ever). I asked why it didnt state I had more than that and they said it was because I only had 3 yrs NCB on that policy with them. They then suggested if I wanted to prove my full NCB I would have to go back to all my previous insurance companies and get NCB certs off them to verify previous years  Logically I thought these things carried over, after all I had to produce previous NCB certs when I first took out insurance so surely these should have been noted?

In the end for the hassle factor I ended up staying with AA for another year as I couldnt be ar$ed ringing two of my previous insurance companies asking for NCB certs, one of them was Quinn from years ago so nuff said!

Anybody else had this problem? Is this common practice?

Are you sure that it didn't state that you had a full NCB but 3 years claims-free driving on that policy? That's what the NCB Cert would usually say. I would have thought that the new ins co could easily have verified your bonus with the AA - it certainly wouldn't have deterred me from changing.

It simply says NCB, 3 years, nothng else in reference to previous.

What did the new ins co say when you told them? I'm sure they could have checked with the AA to ensure that you were entitled to a full NCB.

They said it was my responsibility to provde the NCB I was claiming. AA would only stand over the history I ad with them.

It appears that when moving to a new company they only use your previous NCB as a means of clarification and it holds no sway with them when reporting NCB's thereafter.

That sounds odd. My current insurer has always included the years of NCB earned with my previous insurer in the NCB statement they send out at renewal time. Given the fact that they're the ones you gave your previous NCB statement to and that they've presumably been giving you discount for it, why wouldn't they be willing to issue it.

I got a renewal notice from Quinn Direct this week including a statement of a 6 year NCB, despite only joining Quinn last year. Bad form from AA

That does sound bad. One for the insurance ombudsman?

I'm going to write to them, I'm not going to get any satisfaction over the phone via the call centre.

Thanks for the replies folks, just wanted to get some idea if this was normal practice, obviously not!

I got my renewal through Axa from my broker a few weeks ago and it said something like actual years claim free driving on this policy 1
Points earned on on our NCD scale 4

Are you sure there was no mention of anything like that OP?

It did. It said "points earned on our NCB scale 6"

    What does this mean

Im kinda wondering that myself to be honest! I have 3 years experience in my own name and 1 year named driving before that. That = 4 points on their NCD
scale apparently. Im wondering if that counts as 4 years claim free driving. Hopefully someone else will be able to clarify this scale they use.

Time driving claim free under your own name should be fully transferrable. Time spent as a named driver will be entirely dependant on the practices of each particular insurer.

    Op,
Make sure to send registered letter (you'd be surprised how these get 'lost in the post').

It definately does not mention X claim free years and earned up to 3 years ncb or something similar?

Either way hope it works out for you!

I'm not trying to hijack the thread but I'm having same problems with my NCD Cert.

Says number of years claims free on this policy is: 1

But also says percentage NCD that has been allowed is 40%, which is under 3 on their table of Points on Scale.

This is an AXA Broker Certificate of NCD.

I know myself I should have a 2 year NCD. This Cert makes no sense in any shape make or form!! Why can't they just clarify what they mean!
