people are probably sick of seeing sky hd threads (which in im sorry)but im seriously thinking of getting sky hd,iv a top notch 42" tv so I might as well get the best out of it

what has hold me off before is the 15 euro per month but that doesn't seem to go away so might as well just hold up the white flag

so I want to know a couple of stuff
    • how are the pace sky hd boxes like these days, quiet and reliable ?
    • iv the sports package with ESPN but no movies,is it worth it ?
    • anymore channels down the line for HD
    • what's the hd quality like ?

I have Sky+ HD and I really only got it because I got a new shiny Panasonic G10L and wanted it showcase the TVs capabilities and tbh I couldn't really care less as I don't watch too much TV this time of the year, next October and November though I will appreciate it.

HD content is still in its infancy and alot is only unscaled while some is truly breathtaking. Some of the HD channels don't broadcast HD all the time and what I really am p'd off with it is MTV's attempt at its channel which really only consists of HD recordings of rock concerts of bands no one has heard of. I'd like to see the likes of Smash hits or kiss in HD to show popular music in HD.

History HD and National Geographic are cool and the bigger recording capacity than normal Sky+ is great but quickly eaten up if recording lots of high def content.

I have had Sky HD for 2 months now and wouldn't give it up now even if I lost my job (possible exaggeration there!). I also have a top notch 37" G10 Panasonic LCD and the picture quality on HD sources is terrific. The thing about any of the latest Full HD displays is that they really need HD sources to show what they can do. Let's face it, SD on a larger displays is only OK at best. Some SD channels look muck because of the low broadcast bitrate..but with HD you get the effect the way it should be..deep rich colours, unbelievable clarity and sharpness etc. Anyway to your questions:

The Pace HD boxes are fine, no problems at all. Some people have said that they are not mad about the EPG but I don't agree.

I have the HD Movies pack as well as the Sports (including ESPN and still Setanta :o). I wasn't initially keen on getting in the movies but now I think it's great having them. I watch at least 2 good films per week in stunning HD and there are loads of channels showing loads of films. Granted a lot of them are repeated frequently.

To sum up: I think Sky HD is the business, purely for the enjoyment of the picture quality. OK so it is expensive and a bit of a luxury. The total cost of the HD pack (including sports and movies) will set you back €80/ month and doesn't include ESPN (or Setanta :o!). I justify it because it has taken me out of the pubs on Saturday's and Sunday's for the big games, where you tend to spend like mad. So an obvious thumbs up from me!

I don't subscribe to Sky Sports or Sky Movies but I did see a little soccer on ITV HD and it was good. I do regret buying Sky+ HD because of my timing as I should have got it in at the begining of winter, but otherwise no regrets as I love the HD content.

I got it installed in the beginning of June as I was under the impression the €49 box + €50 for install offer was over on May 1st and that the price of the box would rise again.

It is also a fair disgrace that Sky are charging extra for the HD content €14.75/ month like they used to for Sky+. I predict that HD broadcast TV on Sky will not take off properly until this charge is got rid of and hopefully they might do something in preparation for the 2010 World Cup which will see an upsurge of HD TV sales in the UK. I don't even have a bluray player at the moment and my HD content is Sky and the Xbox. There are a few new HD channels to launch soon hopefully but I don't expect it to get much bigger as the market share of HD viewers between the UK and IRL is only like 1.5million Sky HD customers and Sky are really killing HD with that charge.

Dont expect WC 2010 to have any effect on sky HD, if anything, it would probably only fuel sales of Freesat HD. Speaking of the WC in HD, i imagine it all, to be in HD, on BBC HD and ITV1 HD.:)

Cant see them dropping the HD charge anytime soon. The best one can hope for is a reduction in the 14.75€/month charge, to 10€ or something maybe
