Welcome to the WC thread. The 'Road to Berlin' Thread has fulfilled its purpose, and I shall be un-stickying it soon and putting this baby in its place.

    Timetable of Irish competing

    So the team is:

Olive Loughnane Loughrea AC 20k Walk
Robert Heffernan Togher AC 20k Walk
    Paul Hession Athenry AC 200m
Derval O’Rourke Leevale AC 100m Hurdles
David Gillick Dundrum South Dublin AC 400m
Roisin McGettigan Sli Culann AC 3,000m Steeplechase
    Alistair Cragg Clonliffe Harriers 5,000m
Eileen O’Keefe Kilkenny City Harriers Hammer
Jamie Costin West Waterford AC 50k Walk
Colin Griffin Ballinamore AC 50k Walk
Deirdre Ryan Dundrum South Dublin AC High Jump
Deirdre Byrne Sli Cualann AC 1,500m
Michelle Carey Dublin Striders AC 400m Hurdles
    Thomas Chamney Crusaders 800m / 1,500m

Can Hession finally crack 20.30? Will Gillick pace himself to the final and then unleash another sub 45? Will Olive Loughnane and Heffernan move to the nicer side of a top 10 finish? Michelle Carey to crack 56 seconds? Deirdre Ryan to go 1.90m+? Chammers to finally ge tthe A standard in teh CHampionships tehmselves (:P)? Eileen O'Keefe to return to 70m throwing? Cragg to fulfill his promise (I think he's been codding us this season and is building anticipation for a sub 13!)? Derval to go 12.8/7? Or McGettigan to recover her form?

    Some non-Irish highlights:

    - Bolt v Gay v Powell (now that he's allowed to compete!)
    - Wariner V Merritt
    - Lagat v. Bekele (if he doubles) and the Kenyan contingent
    - Saladino v Phillips
    - Kanter to get WR?
    - Thorki vs the Finns
    - Felix vs. Campbell-Brown
    - Richards versus the last 100m?
    - Jamal versus Burka over 1500m.
    - Dibaba v Defar v Abygelesse
    -Vlasic v Friedrich
    - Wlodaryck v Hrasnova v Lysenko v Heidler
    - Isi to get beaten?

Any other battles you're looking forward to?

Let's try and keep the convo civilised and let's hope we'll be celebrating at the end of it. I'm predicting a sneaky bronze from Loughnane.

I'm heading over myself, and I'll try to post a few pics.

was actully looking forward to this, but just noticed no sign of it on RTEs listings, didn't they used to show it previous years

Unfortunately no coverage this year. BBC have excellent coverage usually (unless they blab on about Dwain Chambers for a few hours as usual) and Eurosport will have it too. Think IAAF are streaming it somewhere for those in the office.

Startlists for tomorrow morning are up.
Roisin has avoided most of the big names in her heat but it's still going to be tough!

Timetable of the irish competing from the Athletics Ireland website

Any chance you can edit your post to include this link at the top Rineanna? Save me having to look for it every day! Thanks

Thanks for that, might need to change the time of my run tomorrow now.

Looks like Chamney is gonna have a tough time of it...Lagat, Rui Silva, Higuero, Zerguelaine AND Kiprop in his heat! Fingers crossed for him. He deserves to at least get out of his heat.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,762 ✭✭✭✭ecoli

Roisin made a good go at the start of the race but failed to qualify in a time of 9.59.10 long way off the first 10

Yeah I was very dappointed that the world chmps were not on RTE or even TG4. Intead I signed up for a months subscription on Eurosport for only 4.90 euro/month and you can terminate at end of month. Excellent coverage and commentary.

Normally I would have no interest in the Walk, but got to admit ... a great battle going on here between Borchin and Wang. Looks like Borchin will get the better of it.

Heffernan with a SB in 15th though i say he will be dissapointed with that. So far not off to the best of starts

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,492 ✭✭✭Woddle

Heffernan 15th in 1'22'09 not bad but I did have a bet on him to medal but good performance all the same.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,029 ✭✭✭Pisco Sour

How do people rate Olive Loughnane's chances tomorrow? Has she got a realistic shot of a medal? Or would that be expecting a small bit too much?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,330 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Am I right in thinking that there's only 7 europeans in the women's 400m field?

    http://berlin.iaaf.org/results/racedate=08-15-2009/sex=W/discCode=400/combCode=hash/roundCode=h/results.html#detW_400_hash_h

Shows how tough the standard is.

Anyway, looking forward to Chamney this evening. Obviously hoping for a slowish heat, and we can see what kind of racer he is (as opposed to runner).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 886 ✭✭✭Caprica

Chamney was unlucky there, if he got a clear run he would defo have been Top 5. The South African might be DQed for the pushing and shoving.

He might get a fastest loser spot, but still two heats to go.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 58 ✭✭runnnerrr

Chamney runs 3.42.54 to finish 7th in his heat
    2nd fastest loser atm!

Still has an outside chance of qualifying. Needs someone to slow down the 4the heat.

I don;t know how unlucky he was. Pretty much the dream race for him the way it played out and he just let himself get into the wrong position. Certainly looked good enough to be qualifying to me.

    Yeah looks like he's gone

    Gonzo i think.

Pity, thought he looked really strong. I actually would never had put Chamney down as a 1500 runner before this season but it could well be worth his while concentrating on it in European year in 2010

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 239 ✭✭ChickenTikka

Pity Chamney not through, sounds like he was unlucky. Anyone know if any internet site that showing it live? Having to rely on live radio at:- http://berlin.iaaf.org/audio/RadioPopUp.html and live results at:- http://berlin.iaaf.org/live/live.html#3_W_HJ_R_u

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,612 ✭✭✭gerard65

Bolts playacting:mad: Its getting a bit boring, borish.

Without meaning to state the obvious but I definitely think the 100 metre world record will be smashed tonight by both Gay and Bolt. I'm going to go with Bolt for the win in 9.63 and Gay in second in 9.65 :)

What did people think of Powells first round run yesterday ? I was sure he was going to be run out of it. Had a great second round run in fairness to him

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 134 ✭✭Kiptanui

I can't see Gay running 9.65. Maybe the semis will show us something to suggest he can.

Powell is always strong in the early rounds. He switched off in the 1st round but looked good in the quarter.
Dwain Chambers looked strong and should make the final.
Bolt is astonishing. He is a showman and I enjoy his antics before races but am starting to get bored of his play acting mid race.

The Heptathlon is really great this championships. Fantastic shot putt from Jessica Ennis under pressure. Also quite stunning to see a multi event athlete do 12.93 for 100m Hurdles. Very solid start to LJ, 6M 19 and she took off from behind the board losing 22cm!!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭myflipflops

Did anybody see the interview with Caster Semenya after the heats of the Womens 800 on Eurosport?

    No! Was watching BBC. :(
    What was said?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭myflipflops

Nothing especially intesting in what she said, more how she said it.

Has a deeper voice than me and I'm a 17 stone bloke. It was weird.

Actually hasn't been the quality of head to head competition I was hoping for yet because I thought it would be a major battle between Ennis and Dobrynska but I have to agree about Ennis. She really looks the real deal. A star in the making at a great time for the sport in Britain.

Hi guys, Just been watching some of the athletics on tv. I was hoping someone could clear up an argument in my house. As you ll gather from this question im a novice when it comes to athletics. The question is are the outside lanes further distance around the track? And is this why they staggger the starting places - to make up for the advantage of being on the inside. I just cant accept that a smaller circumference on the inside can be the same as the larger one on the outside my partner argues otherwise. Please ignore my ignorance !! would like if someone could clear this up. :)

Yep, outside lane is significantly longer. Think of two concentric circles. The larger one will have a longer circumference.

Agreed it's a bit OTT at times. Still hopes he wins though

Olive currently 5th in the walk and did anyone see the rather oversized woman in one of the heats, she must have been about 14/15 stone, she still ran 14 sth though

Seen her alright, reminded me of Gerd Kanter's celebration in Beijing, where he ran the 100m! But still fair play to her not a terrible time.
    Come on Olive!!!!!!:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 134 ✭✭Kiptanui

    Olive is absolutely flying!!
She normally produces negative splits and walked the fastest final 10km of the entire field in Beijing. Huge chance of a medal here. Lets hope she can keep it together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭SitUbuSit

Olive is now in pretty much joint 2nd place with the Chinese athlete Liu (What is it with Chinese athletes taking medals from the Irish at World Championships! ;) and they're both 56 secs behind 1st at the 15km mark!

    C'mon the Irish!

Are we on our way to our first world medal since Gillian O'Sullivan in 2003?
    Remarkably consistant performer!
The russian looks to have the gold through Kaniskina. Olive looks strong, silver is there for the taking.

This has to be a medal! Must be silver
