    hi,

I have bought a buffalo drivestation 1TB-USB ( model hd-ce1.otu2-eu) and I partitioned it into 2 slices ( 700gb and 293gb) and i want to use it as an external boot disk for my mac mini running mac os 10.5.8.

i have copied across the os using carbon copy without errors and then selected the external disk as the boot disk but i'am unable to boot from it 8 times out of 10. is it supported to boot from the disk ?.

an oddity is the "About this mac" window still show me booting from the original disk and not the new one:mad:

    Any idea's would be appreciated.

    thanks in advance

    brendan

Should be bootable but you're probably better off doing a fresh OS install onto the external and then migrating from the internal drive.

Is it an Intel Mac? In order to be bootable the drive must be formatted using the GUID partition table.

Most PPC Macs can't boot from USB, only Firewire.

    hi

thanks for the input, yes its setup with the guid partition ok and I'am hoping to avoid the fresh install option.

after a couple of attempts at selecting the external boot disk and rebooting it "appears" to have settled down and the "About this mac" now show the external disk as the boot disk.

I'am just copying over my data/music files and I will attempt a couple of reboots to determine how stable it is .

think i'll hang onto the original boot disk , just in case !

    thanks once again
