Hey all, looking to get the other half an iPod Touch for his birthday, thinking about getting the 16GB model.

does anyone know where's the cheapest to buy one in dublin? doesn't necessarily have to be in the city centre.

the apple site is charging €279 plus free delivery which i can afford, but just wondering if there were any bargains out there!

arent all shops charging the exact same price for them?
apple control the price or something.

only way to get a discount is to buy online from pixmania or dabs or similar, or somewhere thats having a massive sale on, but iirc when harvey norman had their big sale, the touch was slightly, very slightly discounted.

do you need it ASAP or have you the time to order online?

    similar thread here

this discount might be still available, i havent tried it

also, may be some info in this thread

The only place I know where you can get a discount is from the Apple site while logged in as a student. Can't remember what exactly it entailed but I bought one of the old 2nd genertation iPod's a good few years ago from the site and got about 30 or 50 off the price. I think all that was required was the name of the college...
So if you are a student or can get a student friend to buy it online and give them the money it might be worth a go.

Apple don't control the pricing to the consumer, however, they do set the price at which they sell to distribution who supply the retailers. Then it is up to the retailer to charge what they like .... the reason why all pricing seems the same is that Apple have their price online and it would be stupid for a retailer to charge more than apple.

They won't charge less than apple either as the retail margins on ipods are about 3%, a couple of euro in reality.

Yeah, they usually drop in price and go up in capacity so you'd be mad to buy one now unless it was very discounted. Sep 7th is when the new ones are launched.

I'd be interested to know if this is really the case. Surely Tesco or someone would sell them for say 2% and expect that they could make up the difference on the street cred, plus sales of accessories and other stuff in the store of course.

believe me it is the case, I worked for a few years with a company who sold macs and actually didn't bother with ipods as it just wasn't worth the hassle for the few euro margin.

the likes of tesco could probably do it as a loss leader ... but would it be in their interest? if someone wants an ipod they will just buy it ..

his birthday is the 21st and preferably i'd like to have it for him then.

also, i'm trying to save at the moment so hoping to keep the price under €300; i assume the new models are going to cost quite a bit more!

i'm going into town next week and i'll shop around and see which one is the cheapest, don't really have the time to order online!

    cheers for all the replies

you could go to an argos up north

214 pounds sterling here and with the rate from XE its 249euro but maybe add a few quid extra, and then the travel up so probably not worth it unless you know somebody going up anyway.
