70 euros to enter a half marathon in a new event....plus and extra 5 euro to register to some web site

2 other halfs on in Ireland on same day

Blarney - 15 euro to enter (low key event)
Derry - Approx 1000 entrants well organised tried and tested 20 euro

I have done half's all over the world and looking back the average entry fee is 35 euro

Dublin Full through a capital city with road closures is only 70
Sydney Full was only 70 euros for Full

Absolute disgrace and I and other runners are boycotting it for that reason.

One person I know entered for the senic views but when im running looking around is the last thing on my mind

I have no problem if changing my view if some one can make me see the value for money in doing it and would have no problem entering if it was worth it , I just feel they are taking advantage and I'd be curious to see how many people have actually entered the half and how many people are going to kill themselves by training for the half and doing the full just because it costs the same amount

    Overpriced or Not....you decide

Is the Donegal half a rip off at 70 euro 41 votes

Yes I think Im having my shorts pulled down !!

Galway Bay half marathon - 60euros

    Galway Bay 10k - 60euros.

    <<insert rolly eyes>>

However as has been mentioned before, people are fully entitled to charge what they like for a race. As long as people continue to enter races with a high entry fee, there will continue to be races with a high entry fee.

The only thing I find annoying is that a lot of races with a high entry fee, seem to give the impression that part of the race fee is towards charity. They don't explicitly say it, but it's hinted at or marketed as a "charity run", however no information on what they are contributing to the charity, if anything, is given.

Totally agree, like everything else in Dingle, a rip off, maybe they are hoping for busloads of americans to arrive and run it while they follow them in a van with ceile music blasting out of a p.a

Classic and a Brendan Gleeson type character from in Brugges advising them not to take part - "Sir I wouldnt advise you to do that!"

Hard to vote when it hasn't even been run yet.

I've entered as it's local and no transport/accommodation costs. Probably will prove to be a horrible rip-off, but I'll make my mind up afterwards.

Maybe, just maybe, it will be a mind-blowing new benchmark in half-marathons!

And we can get an ice-cream afterwards- a snip at €4 a scoop!

How much are they charging for the full thing?

I entered, by the time I realised what the entry fee was it was too late...it's an unreal amount to charge for a half marathon, I gather it's because they don't think they'll break even if the fee is lower? They do have buses put on for the half participants to bring them back to the start line.

Is the Connemara not the same price... Yes a rip off but people pay it..

The bus drivers must be paid to bring people back from the wilds of the peninsula

Lol, but on a serious note, a friend of mine is running in it (more money than sense!) and hes taking a day off work to go down on the fri(from dublin) as its on early saturday morning, wise move by the organisers as they can bump up the cost of accomodation in the area for the fri night....

I did it in 2008 , very enjoyable well organised but I noticed a guy in the gym with the 2009 tshirt on and its the exact same , and apparently the 2007 one was the same also, they just changed 1 character per year.....bit weak highlight of the event was the announcer calling out my name as I crossed the line all I could think of was Father ted when they go to the funland carnival park...

Why a rip-off? You're fully aware of the charge and can choose whether or not to enter. As has been said in this and previous threads, for-profit races will charge what they think the market will stand.

In this instance I've decided it's too expensive for me, but I wouldn't feel ripped off had I entered. I'm therefore voting no :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 302 ✭✭blind_hurler

yeah think I'll stick to the Cork half which is on the day before for 20euro (pre-entry) or 25euro entry on the day

They have some neck charging a whole 5euro extra for entry on the day :D:D:D

I think Dario is trying to say, rip off by comparison....

Don't think so Brother, the question implies that someone is extracting money from you against your will. They're not. Best way to deal with it, as the O/P says, is to decline their kind offer.

    So should the poll read

No, as I won't give them 70 euro for a half marathon

€80 for the DCM, €70 for Connemara - the list goes on & on. Is any race that charges €70 taking the Pi$$?

There are more and more races today than a few years ago. These can only survive by offering the punter value for money so that they will return to run it again. I would prefer to see what the comments on the Dingle race are afterwards from those who have run it. Was it worth the money?

The best way to let the organisers know that the price is too dear is to stay away.

I do object to the Dingles and Connemaras charging the same or nearly the same entry fee for the half as the full. However I can see that the bulk of the money will come in from those doing the half and therefore from a financial point of view they would be daft not to charge these prices.

The question is are we daft enough to pay them??

Why is the Donegal half mentioned in the poll?!

Also the Blarney half is the day AFTER Dingle.

I for one will avoid Dingle, paid €60 for Achill and that was enough of being ripped off for me.

€25 is enough for any race

A "rip off price" is what Dario is polling and "you" have "been ripped off" if you have paid it, thats my thoughts on this Roy ;)
The price is what it is and any exorburent price may warrant the term "rip off".
If you have paid/not paid an over the odds price for something, then you could say you were ripped off/not ripped off..., and yes we all have the right to decline their offer for sure

Just been talking to my friend who is running it and he is glad to pay the price as hes ran all the irish marathons so far and hes delighted to run another one in another county.
He doesnt mind the 70 euro cost as hes running the full course anyhow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 907 ✭✭✭macinalli

If you think it's too expensive then don't enter! Simple as. Most of the big races in Ireland are over-priced, I don't think this is any different.

I signed up for the Dingle full - cost me €60 and I'm looking forward to running in a really scenic part of the country. Am thinking of doubling and doing Dublin but won't decide til after Dingle. Trying to decide though if it'll be worth €90 for a lot less attractive route...

No idea how the poll has changed to Donegal , I typed Dingle !!

Also edited the original post to change the wording from rip off to over priced

I guess thats similar to the way pubs charge for the service of serving a drink to a customer ... a half-pint does not cost half of what a full pint costs. Its the cost of the service you're paying for ... logistically its probably taking close to same organisation to run off either a half and or a full. So to accomodate a full on the same day as a half means just an earlier race start time for some and an extra 13.1 miles to throw a few signs on and some extra stewarding.

But I agree the prices are exorbitant and unfortunately it will end up killing a useful revenue stream for clubs and charities.

The argument that people can decide whether or not to participate is true but race inflation will eventually kill off alot of people's enthusiam in running these races. We're in a Celtic Cheetah race price bubble that will bring the market crashing down around us ;).
