    Ah that sucks.

Hopefully he'll recover fully, because, he's a great player, and I'd not be surprised at all if he's the next Ireland captain.

Crap for him, but on the flip side this will give Nigel Brady a full season of game time and from the few glimpses i saw from him last year i was extremely impressed a very mobile and strong number 2.

Humphreys said he was looking for a replacement worldwide though!

Sounds serious enough, chronic disc problem? Frankie Sheahan and POC were out for longer than expected with neck and back injuries.

Wish him all the best, I didnt rate him at all a few season ago but his stock had been gradually rising since.

Awful for Ulster/Ireland, he'd be a superb captain for Ireland imho. He's 27 soon (according to wiki) so hopefully he'll be back next season and have a good run to the RWC.

    Very tough on him tho.

    Ah I doubt it!

It's a Huge loss for ulster, but Ireland also lose the competition that pushed Flannery and Best to produce their best performances! Shame. Any ideas who would replace Best in the Ireland set up? Jackman?

Id hate to see them import a cheap hooker (sounds awfull in a sentence doesn't it :P) because of this. They have Brady and Kryacaiua or whatever he calls himself, maybe just promote a Academy player to cover for injuries.

@Above Poster: My guess would be Croinn and id fully support him benching and even starting in the green number 2.

Don't forget Denis Fogarty. If he gets his darts right he could be outstanding. He had a few blinders at the end of last season.

based on most recent squads, Jackman

I too would echo the hopes that Ulster might pick up a replacement from the existing irish players

Shame for Best but fortunately hes relatively young. For Ireland I would probably like Cronin to step up I think Jackmans had his chance and isn't going to step up at international level.

Richardt Strauss will be eligible for Ireland in 3 years.. too late for 2011 though!

How so? Jackman hasn't featured in either of this seasons squads, whereas Cronin has been listed in both, and Fogarty in one.

We've yet to see Strauss play in Ireland, he could easily be another Jowitt. We should be looking to develop younger Irish players, if possible.

was jackman not third choice hooker for the 6N?

Jackman's also had surgery on his knees this summer, and wasn't training to a very high level at all during most of last year. Not sure how the surgery went, but thats gotta put a question mark over him.

Jackman's much better than any of them.

Kyriaco's eligible for Ireland isn't he? If he does well it migth even be him who becomes sub hooker.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭outwest

jackman isnt even in the training squad. croinin should be the sub.
it time to stop picking the golden oldies. jackman time is up. i thaught he has dodgy knees, he be lucky to be playing most of leinster games this year.

petty about best i had even above flannery

Sean Cronin is better than Bernard Jackman, without a doubt in my mind. And Kidney adores Cronin, he wouldn't be at Connacht if Kidney was still at Munster.

How old is Jackman now anyway? 32/33? Player/Coach with Clontarf this season, dont see why he should be in a squad with one eye on the RWC.

    Pity about Rory B!:(

I dunno, Jackman has more experience than either, but both Fogs and cronin have the potential to be better than Jackman.

Kyricou's is Irish qualified due to his mother or grandmother, iirc. Also a guy who needs to start turning his potential into playing-ability.

Id not like to hrow speculation but a chronic back problem for a front rower could be a career ending injury.
The man could end up crippled if he continues playing no matter how good the surgeon.
In saying that im gutted for him and hope he has a quick and full recovery and is back on the field sooner rather than later.

Ah I dunno, I think Jackman's overrated in Leinster and underrated outside of it. I really like him, and think he's a fantastic player, but for his injury problems.

Dunno about the Fogartys, Cronin looks alright for definite. And Kyriaco has a lot of hype, let's hope he lives up to it.

Big loss for Ulster and Ireland and I hope he pulls through this and continues to play rugby, it would be awful for the family to lose two players from rugby so early due to illness or injury.

I always find it comical when some starts a sentence like that ^ and then continues with this these

Was it not a valid point a guy who plays an extremely attritional sport has major back surgery may be fooked in the longterm?

Comical come on get more please and fwiw i am racist.

This should pave the way for Sean Cronin....ah Jackman is a hero, but if we're being honest with no tinted glasses, his line out throwing is just unacceptable and he has poor discipline and gives away stupid penalties on occassion. He's a good player, but the likes of Flannery, Best & Cronin are better.

How's Flannerys fitness? Does this mean Cronin might start for Ireland in AIs?

Why say you don't want to throw speculation and then proceed to do excactly that?

Underrated outside? He spent 8 years at Connacht. And he was poor, v.poor. Ironically, he is ahead of Fogarty in Leinster but it was vice-veraa down west.

His work in the loose makes up for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

Always has - Jackmans play in the loose is the biggest part of his game, and one he excelled at in comparison with the other two main hookers in Ireland in the 2007/2008 season especially.

Tbh, I'd lay a bet that Fogarty and Strauss will get a huge amount of gametime with Leinster this season thanks to Jackmans own body being in crap. Was talking to someone a while ago whose daughter he's married to, and was saying the poor guy does suffer a huge amount outside of game time thanks to his knees and back. Could be another Paul Wallace style figure in years to come, showing just what the sport can do to you long term.

Jaysus - just looked at his wikipedia page, he's only 37?! I thought he was mid 40s at least...

That is a very long time to be out with an injury. Is he the Johnny Wilkson of hookers? Unless someone else step up to it if Flannery gets injured Ireland will struggle with their line-outs in 6N.

We'd be in trouble alright, if Fla gets injured it'll be Cronin who gets the nod, Cronin is turning into quite a good hooker but then the question of backup comes into play. Neither Fogarty or Jackman throw at a consistent level so we'd be fairly fúcked.

We're probably due a major injury crisis after our virtually injury free 6 Nations this year. Karma and all that...

Terrible news for Rory, Ulster and Irish rugby. Rory is a tremendous player and how he was overlooked for Lions tour is beyond me. Ross Ford!!? I really hope the injury clears up and Rory comes back fit and refreshed. He has so much to offer Irish rugby for many years yet.

In a way isnt he lucky he wasnt called out? Could have done more damage to the problem.

True, obviously if there was a problem there the man above was looking after him. Who knows how long he has had this or was it a new injury?
