Hi all, being let go end Dec and will be entitled to claim job seekers. What I would like to know is, if I get a few small jobs here and there am I still entitled to claim the full jobseekers or what is the process? These jobs will be completely random and would be hard to put a value on them for the year.
Also is there an opportunity to claim jobseekers while starting your own business if I made a go of it

If you're self-employed you get nothing off them.

If you're getting oddball jobs here and there, it's best to just do them quietly and not tell anyone official about them. Telling them will only lead to more aggro and irritance. You'll have more forms to fill in and will have to keep informing them of every job you do, when you did it and how long you took it (obviously you can't be "currently looking for work" if you're busy working for yourself).

I'm not 100% sure of the ins and outs of it all, but as far as I know, If you go the self-employed route, and everything collapses on you, and you go back on the dole, you'll lose money based on what you've earned and may (possibly) be entitled to nothing. Now is not a good time to start out (officially) really.

If you're adamant, however, when you're setting up as a proper self emplyed guy, do not register as a Ltd. company. Lots of people do this as its the most straight forward, easiest route. However, unbeknownst to most of said people, you get charged a few quid every year for being a limited company. Im not sur ehow it's calculated but a bloke I know, who wasn't extremely busy by any means, was looking at paying just over €1,000 at the end of year one, so he unregistered as soon as he could to avoid the charge, but of course, unregistering costs money too. I think he got away with paying about 600-700 to bury his company. Look very deeply into it before going ahead.

Please however, don't take my post to heart. I'm sure I could be wrong on a lot of what I said, but just be careful and go over everything in your head before doing anything, especially as regards to Welfare. There's nothing worse than having the best of intentions and leaving yourself broke because of it.

    Best of luck

KKV - that is SW Fraud and suggestions of it won't be tolerated - infracted.

Youtharmy - if you were to do this you would have to sign off for every day that you work in your self employed business. You are best to go into your local office who will explain the process to you in detail.
