Bicycle theft

    Hey folks,

I had the misfortune of stepping out from work last night and finding my Beloved Mountain Bike gone from the place were I park and lock it every morning.
    Joyful.

Now, I'm fairly new to the country, so could someone tell me who I should contact to report the theft? I believe I have all the information that is needed (Like the original invoice, a description of the bike and the frame number and so on), and should I contact the company who does the surveillance on the area where I parked it, or would the Garda do that? (I'm assuming they're the ones I have to contact, but I have no idea).

    Thanks for your help,

    It's much appreciated.

Report it to the local Garda station.

Sorry to hear about the theft, you should report it to your local Garda stn and provide them with all the details including any serial numbers etc. if possible.

Be aware however that the chances of retrieving your bike are very slim and if it was'nt stolen by skangers to be sold on for a few quid it may have been stolen by pro's who will strip the bike down to its parts to be sold at markets or even on gumtree.ie and adverts.ie as highlighted by a recent case.

Eitherway consider it gone and attempt to contact the management/security company responsible for the area, if a private secure car-park etc. it may be worth attempting to retrieve costs from the security company or at the very least review the CCTV fottage and forward any relevant data to the Gardai. The liability of these company's is however extremely limited so don't be surprised if you get no joy! Good luck

    Thanks for all the advice.

I've called both the car park where it was parked, and they're reviewing the footage (they'll only release it to the Gardai naturally) and I've been in contact with the Gardai, and am heading to the local station tomorrow to report the theft.

I don't expect to see it again unfortunately, as some pointed out, which is a shame, but I want whomever did it punished...

As I'll be looking for a new bike then, any idea on where to get a good and cheap bike?

At the risk of causing offence by picking over the remains of your dearly departed, what lock were you using?

I used a heavy Wire type lock, so that it was chained through the frame and around the "fence" and should be unmovable.

This type of lock is only suitable as an auxiliary lock for your wheels or saddle, or for very brief use (e.g. popping quickly into a shop in broad daylight). They can be snipped by hand with bolt croppers in a few seconds.
