    Hi all

I try avoiding too much starch & simple carbs as they make me so tired and bloated. Has anyone heard of tofu Shiritaki noodles? I googled low carb noodles the other day and they came up but most of the stuff was USA sites. I tried my local Asia market but they didn't have them and wondered if anyone has heard of, or if they'd know if any Asia markets do them here. They seem to be a blend of a type of yam root and tofu.

My weakness is noodles I love them in stirfrys but find sometimes they leave me bloated too .... the flavour sachets I just throw away anyhow because they're full of additives and I can't sleep if I put it in!

Anyway if you've heard of them, have tried them..know where to buy them..I'd like to try em, thanks if you can :)

I have looked and looked, but never found low carb noodles in Ireland. If you really want them, I'd just order some on-line. If they are amazing, you might be able to get a local shop to stock them for you.

Personally, I think noodles are over-rated. Eat them on their own and they taste like wallpaper paste.

hmmm, normally im not a fan of bland food (wouldnt touch pasta on its own) but the egg noodles are delicious!

:D know what you mean with some of them there noodles. I don't like egg noodles corkcomp....each to his own though. The koka ones aren't too rubbery and are the lightest ones I've come accross really and not too gluey. . . minus the hallucinogenic flavour sachets ...even though they're addictive and I find it extremely hard to bin them before being tempted to chuck them into the pot :(

I bought the regular non-tofu shirataku noodles off the net. They come in a bag of really fishy smelling water so I couldn't bring myself to eat them!

Apparently if you wash them thoroughly they don't taste like the water they're stored in, but I found that out after I threw them away :(

The tofu ones are supposed to be much better with the right level of 'bite' for a noodle. If you do order them report back and let us know if they are like the real thing.

I'm usually full of good intentions to check out all those things, then baulk when I see the cost of postage. I'm just too tight to shell out air mail on food. But when I go abroad, I always make a point of keeping half the space in my case for any interesting food I can't get at home.

The asia market on drury st in Dublin stock these sometimes, but have them under konnyaku yam strips rather than noodles as such. These are the non-tofu type. Didn't manage to purchase these last time I was there, they were sold out (obviously popular), and bought the yam cake instead. Looked so much like frogspawn I had to get rid.

Thanks for the info....frogspawn:eek:...eeek I dunno now if trying those ones you've mentioned would be very appetising ...

Off topic, but as a by the way, I love your username Eviledna...I used to love Willo-the-Wisp....is is after that is it?!

...would these yam strips be where they stock the noodles? I went in there once before and didn't know if I was in a supermarket or a modern art gallery it can be very confusing!

TG they sound a bit rotten all in....my stomach's not very strong for smells like that so I think I'm going to chicken out and end up sticking to Koka ones...I'll do an extra ten minutes running instead!!

If I am brave enought to get them I'll post back thanks for the info to all. B

Came across this recipe for egg 'noodles':

Egg "Noodles": Beat 3 egg whites with cream of tartar until very stiff.
Fold in the egg yolks and salt. Place this mixture on a greased baking
sheet with sides (like a jelly roll pan) in case some runs off the sides.
Spread evenly into a thin coat.

Bake 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Allow to
cool slightly, remove with by running a knife under the baked mixture to
    loosen, and slice into "noodles".

    Might be worth a go!

Lord don't eat koka noodles if you can avoid it! They aren't filling and they are very high in kcal! Try 60g normal dried egg noodles instead, much more satisfying.
The konnyaku was in the aisle beside the fridges, near the Japanese section. I asked, and after a lost in translation moment, I was told where they usually are :)

Thanks bout the username, yup, was a huge willo' the wisp fan;) well done getting the reference!

...Edna, thanks for that. I didn't know the koka ones were high in calories, I'm not a huge calorie counter cos I burn them up quickly enough, thought once I left out the flavouring sachet I was doing well!! I don't eat them more than twice a month, but it's good info to have anyway, no point eating them if there's no nutritional value to them...thanks for the recipe for the egg ones TG...I prefer rice ones even to egg though...seen some in tesco that are fresh rice noodles, might give them a go soon too but they're probably stodgy too and not very nutritious either... Thanks all. Noodles in general are not a useful food. If you must eat them, use them to fill the corners after real food. Ideally, eat them before a mega workout.
