    Is it cheaper to get some sterling from the credit union rather than the bank?
    where can i find out the charges in both ?

    Phone, or go into the branch. The rates will be pretty similar, but the commission is different. CU will order the money for you, and you pay whatever exchange rate there is on the day you collect it, not the day you order it.
