Congested towns with a bypass

Midleton for me. Two areas of the town are a nightmare. One is the altered roundabout which they squared off. Its an absolute disaster. The other big one is the junction in the middle of the main street with the road that leads off to Dungourney. No traffic lights and its nigh on impossible to get out of it when there is any kind of traffic.

A relief road has been proposed but I guess with the current economic situation we won't be seeing it any time soon.

Carrick on Shannon, because they've used the entire bypass plus the N4 leading in to the town both sides to develop along, and New Ross because they didn't put a replacement bridge in....

Longford because they only did half the job.

Naas used be bad a few years ago. Though I think the relief road has improved matters somewhat.

Has anyone mentioned Castlebar yet? Awful place, awful traffic and stupid roundabout layouts too.

That bastardised roundabout in the town centre was very bad before the 'relief road' was built. All the arms were exceeding capacity. With the advent of the Market Green development it just made things even worse. With the new road open it just dumps more traffic onto one of the arms which just makes the situation even worse. They really need to get the eastern section of it done but I can't see that happening for a long time.

Naas is still horrible at times. Coming in from Sallins can be very slow. The town had the first motorway bypass in the RoI and has a good relief road in place too. It PROVES (if proff were needed) that you can't simply keep building more roads in an effort to combat congestion. Sometimes the roads aren't the answer ;-)

I think Lucan can be added to that list.

well i think in these examples there is a massive commuting population and inevitably there is going to be congestion...the people are going to Naas/Lucan...a bypass is not relevant

Lucan village is a small place with relatively few inhabitants/businesses. I'm not talking about the vast housing estates, just the village which is often at a standstill. I wouldn't classify Lucan village as a major centre of employment at all tbh.

You said Lucan in your post not specifically the village

the villages problems are primarily due to the road being used to avoid roadworks (which are now complete) and to get to strawberry beds

schools in lucan dont help (school run a primary factor in congestion)

Lucan village's problem is that it has a bridge over the Liffey along a stretch without many alternatives. It is bypassed east-west, but not across the river (except by the M50 bridge three miles away which requires a detour up to the N3/M50 junction at Blanch and 2+ euro for the privilege).

It's the 2 quid that puts people off I reckon. That was Fingal Co Co's reasoning behind removing the original plan for the ORR bridge (in the vicinity of Woodies) over the Liffey from the development plan. They said people would avoid the toll and use the ORR instead.
