Public sector - possible to jump job grades?

I'm hoping for some advice regarding applying for a job in another public body (both where I work currently and the other organisation are public sector but not government bodies).

I took a job equivalent to CO grade last year to fund a postgrad course I was doing (career change) and because the hours suited me. Prior to that I had temped on a couple of occasions within the civil service, also at CO grade. Before that again I worked in the private sector in financial management.

Now a full-time position has come up which is effectively two grades higher than my current role and I fit the description regarding work experience/educational qualifications, but the biggest section on previous employment is of course devoted to my current role (and salary!). I'm hopefully overthinking it in assuming that they might not look too favourably on a CO applying for a job two grades higher - but having been in f/t education for the last year I do have the option of totally omitting my current job from the application if necessary.

I'd like to think any experience is good experience, but is that always the case? Thanks.

It all depends on whether its an open competition or confined to serving officers/staff members. If its an open competition- you are going for the job on your merits- as is every other member of the public (and in the current climate- the competition will be fierce!). If you succeed at open competition- you get whatever the competition specifies.

If its an internal promotion- the norm is you get promoted one grade at a time (with a few exceptions in professional, but not administrative grades).

    If in doubt- ask though.......

Usually they will stipulate in the job ad if you have to be at a certain grade to be eligible to apply. I've seen situations where people have jumped 3 grades so its definately possible.

Having worked in both the public and private sector, I have to say this is the most stupid and ignorant post I have ever read.

If a competition is run by the Public Appointments Commission, it is fair, open and transparent. In the private sector, I have seen so many people get jobs by knowing the boss.

Your post displays a complete lack of knowledge and understanding of the public sector.

I used to work in the public sector and did see people jumping a grade in promotions. With the competency based interview system that's there now, you can show the interview panel how good you are if you're clever with the form and the interview.

This will be a contender for the stupidest post of the month. Your lack of knowledge of the Public Sector is breathtaking!
