WIFI or GSM?

    Howdy all,

Just checked my online O2 account to discover I have been charged a lot for data usage. I just got an iphone last week and my data package desn't kick in until Friday (start of bill cycle). My question is, what data download method is automatically used if you are in a WIFI hotspot? The WIFI or normal GSM network. Most of the downloading I have been doing has been in a WIFI hotspot but on my O2 charge details I have been charged!!? Strange?, no? I have 3G turned off.

Also, when my data allowance usage starts on Friday, again will this take precedence over the WIFI?

Any help to clear this up would be great, thanks. :)

Remember that just being in a wifi hotspot doesn't necessarily mean you're connected to it. You need to go into Settings>wi-fi and manually select the network you want to join. When you're connected the wifi will take precedence over the cellular network. The other thing to note about the iPhone as a PAYG subscriber is that when it goes into standby mode the wifi connection is dropped and it'll revert to the cellular network. Some of the iPhone software contain elements that will make a data connection in the background like Push notifications and Fetch in your email app, so you need to make sure these are set to off, because every time they make a connection, you'll be charged for it.
Also, be aware of what apps automatically make a data connection as soon as you open them, like the weather app, the itunes store, the app store, maps, etc.

If WiFi is set up properly with username and password etc it will always try to use the WiFi connection first. If this fails it will use 3G . . However, turning off 3G does not turn off data download. . It will still try to download over EDGE. .

    . .doh, messages crossed :)
