interested also... I presume we would just start 7.5 miles further up the road?

Easier to just have a straight course without the roundabout if we going out that way. There is a 10 marked from the same start point BTW, not sure where it ends. Our club 10 started in Batterstown village and turned left to go over the Mullagh, left at the end and ending on the Summerhill road.

Would require two marshalls tho? Depending on how many take part I guess somebody could let everyone go and drive to the finish to take times... need to be a small group.

Yea I have seen that start point for the 10, we would need to check where the end marker is ? Anyone know ? It must be the 10m that he Vets use ?

we would definately need 2 time keepers if we are not doing and out/back course, as 10mTT fastest time could easily be 22-23mins ....

Depending on the date, I could possibly do timekeeping. :) Be ages 'til I'm ready to even think of actually doing a TT with you guys! :D

WOuld be on for this depending on dates. Monday Tues or Wed nights suit best, but will be away for 2 weeks from tomorrow.

    Mon 24th?

    Mon 24th?

Date is fine, but it would be helpful to aim for 7.30pm at the earliest. The 7pm start time for the original boards TT is just too tough to make from work?

Well, with a TT you're really only racing against yourself and the clock. Don't mind the times the rest of them set. If you're only new to cycling, or are coming back to it, a TT would be good way of setting a baseline for yourself, and if you do another one next year or whatever, you'll be able to see the progress you've made. Just a thought. :) 10 miles isn't anything to be scared of.

I think it's important that these boards events don't become way too intimidating for the average boards cycling forum type to have a go at. The real racers amonst us have actual races to amuse themselves with, the boards events should really cater for the non-racing/not-yet-racing contingent in particular (but all are welcome naturally).

Antway I'm in, time and date permitting.

I have all my excuse ready for that one. Would have been driving from Cork the previous night after, would have been away from the bikes for 5 days. Perfect! Bring o the 10 MilesTT ...

Lets bring on the Spread sheet

    I don't think I can do the 24th :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 403 ✭✭MadHatter

Wouldn't mind doing it myself but wouldn't be able to make it midweek.

Did somebody mention the option of a self-timed effort +/- 1 day? Could give it a bash on the Sunday I suppose.

Postponing your racing debut for another year so you can dominate the Boards challenges, eh, Tom?

Oh god no, I definitely don't think they're intimidating per se, it's just that I'm literally just back on the bike after years of very little cycling so I want to get some training in first. Mainly it's because I'm horribly competitive and I don't want to do it until I can give a good account of myself - for myself.

At the same time I'm seriously tempted to do it, but I don't think my crappy bike is up to it. Upgrading my bike to a decent model will be my present to myself when I'm convinced I'll stick with this in the long term! :)

Much appreciated though, I'll definitely consider it now.. though I think I'll do a better job as timekeeper!

Deffo on for the this. Actually 'enjoyed' the 25 mile boards one so much that I've done the Batterstown route twice since then. Set a new PB of 1:06.57 this evening.

I might give this a go too.

Route suggestion: 2 laps of this.
Head-wind, side-wind and tail-wind all in one lap.

That could be a good one, might be more accessible too for people who would find Batterstown difficult for 7. Batterstown is a long way to go for a 10 miler too. Could possibly get away with just one marshall at the start point? More would be great but if we didn't have them as cyclists will always be making left turns there only appears to be one place with priority issues (marked "St Margaret's" on the map.) Is that course measured for the ladies league do you know? I believe it is very flat, only downside would be that it is quite cornery.

Would it not be better to do that course anti-clockwise? That way you're always turning corners on the inside and not darting out across oncoming traffic at a turn...

I'd be well up for a TT out by the airport if there is one being organised!

Would certainly suit me - only a short detour from my normal commute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,318 ✭✭✭✭Raam

@leftism: yes, the course is run anti-clockwise.

It's pan flat and marshals are needed at two points, which I have updated the map with. The map be-lies it, but there are only two awkward turns to negotiate. The first leads on to the main road, and the second is at a roundabout leading on to the "runway road". The last corner you can see on the map is fast and can be taken at full speed.
I have marked the typical start point also.

Two laps is shy of 10 miles so the start/stop could be staggered if we really want 10 miles.

Here is the updated route, same link.

Mapmyride is damn awkward, so the start point is the blue one, not the green one. The aid symbols are the marshal points. Would need a timekeeper also. Typically a lap is 15 minutes +/- 1 or 2 depending on wind.

Looking at this on Google Earth the road past St Margarets is straight through - we would have priority over traffic coming from the R122. There also appears to be some hard shoulder along there.

it's not actually that cornery, there is only one real corner and the roundabout....tis windy though.

I am not bad about doing the boot Inn circuit, it's very busy in the evening with alot of Truck traffic, and we are running these in an unofflcial capacity, We would definately attract attention to ourselves running this here ?!?! of an evening...

I think the only way of running in at the Boot Inn circuit would be Saturday/Sunday morning ... 1st rider off early ... 10.00 ...10.30 ...

    Any thoughts ?

Good point. First thing on a Sunday might be the right time.

Will be away for the next two weeks, but if this is on in September, I should be able to make it.

True about the road being busy. I was up there on Tuesday evening and traffic was heavy enough. Hardly anyone on the road alongside the airport though.

It can be quite busy there alright. What about the circut that the DWCC TT league used, Rathoath. 5 mile out and back. You need one person at the start and one out the road. might be a bit far out though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 485 ✭✭biker_joe

thats a runner ! but will all the kids know their way to Rathoath and onto the Skreen Road ? It's not as far Batterstown ....

Jayus there is really feck all decent roads to run a TT on around here ....
I must get the thinking cap on here and see if there is any other routes that can be used .... ideally a 5 or 10 mile stretch no lights, no roundabouts !!

An hour is fine for a weekday evening, the club leagues are the same. If you leave town at 6 you will be there for 7. To be honest for a 10 miler a weekend day seems like a bit of a waste (I'm also booked up every weekend until at least mid-end-September, there are cycling events on.)

If these painfests become a regular thing it shouldn't matter too much if you miss one.

At the risk of complicating things, we should perhaps keep in mind an earlier suggestion about rotating locations between DNS and DSS.

DNS is handy for me though. :)

Agree with Blorg about avoiding weekends. Whilst we have light in the weekday evenings we should make use of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Also note, AFAIK all the club leagues are ending this month so from start September Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday become fine for everyone- might just have to consider sunset though.

The issue with the southside AFAIK is there is not so much in the way of potential time trial courses (although I have a team TT next week around Brittas somewhere, not sure what course is being used.)

Yeah sitting and waiting for everyone to be pleased just delays everything. There could be a minimum number of participants (5 or 6?) and go ahead with it when those minimum are can make it.

    The minimum number is 1.

I did my practice 40 on my own in the dark, for which I claim 0.000001 Tunney points.

+1, the only times that can count are those recorded by a third party timekeeper, it is really the only way to do it.

I read that there was some problems with the location.

I have a route that may suit. A very very quiet stretch of road that runs parallel to the N/M7. It is part of the road from Saggrt to Kill. The piece I am thinking of would start at Steelstown (the hill outside Rathcoole) So 5 miles out and back. You could start or finish on a short hill with a nice gradient to spice it up a bit.

Also, reasonably close access to town. Southside via Tallaght and Citiwest.
Nortside head out via Lucan and Saggrt or Newcastle.
