Entry to the US

I'm planning on going backpacking through Central and South America towards the end of the year, but I want to go to the US first to visit a few friends in New York. The plan is to fly Dublin to New York, New York to Mexico City and then bus it from there with a possible flight from San Jose to Bogata.

My problem is that I've heard that in order to be allowed to enter the US under the VISA waiver program you need to have a return/onward ticket to a country that does not include Canada, Mexico or an adjacent island. My onward flight is to Mexico so I'm worried that I'll be refused entry on this basis.

Anyone have any experience with this.........any help would be much appreciated.
