Obvioulsy this stuff is better than its white cousin, and Im looking to change over as I love pasta and rice (and its so damn easy to cook after a long day at work).

But, from memory, brown pasta and rice tastles like cack. Perhaps, you good people have some suggestions as to what brands, stockists etc might be best?

I'm the opposite. I think brown pasta and rice have much more flavour than white. Or else I have just got used to it and when I taste the white stuff it just has no flavour.
    (Calories aside)
Uncle bens wholemeal rice or Roma wholewheat pasta. There is allot of other brands, including tesco and sq doing there own now.
Boiled brown rice, diced carrot and spring onion, scrambles egg, low salt soy sauce, mixed together.
Brown pasta mixed with your own sauce. Fry some garlic, basil stalks, chili, onion, add tin of tomatoes, basil leaves, season, bring to boil then simmer. Add together.

i cook brown rice whenever i'm making a curry. i find its more bulky and filling than white rice, and i eat less as a result.

keep in mind that brown rice takes approx 40 mins to cook, but it's worth it. it tastes very different to white rice, but i actually prefer it. it's slightly nuttier and woodier, and definitely healthier.

as for brown pasta, i don't think there's much of a difference in taste. it's just slightly more al dente when cooked; it won't go all squidgy and squadgy the way that white pasta can.

    Hi There

I changed over from white to brown Rice/Pasta about 5 years ago now and I do remember that the first couple of times I ate either I did notice the taste difference and at the time thought the wholemeal versions tasted really bad.

It took about a week or so before I got used to the taste of the wholemeal versions and now as has already been mentioned, I find white Rice/Pasta really bland and tasteless.

It's just like when I gave up taking sugar in tea and coffee. Tasted really bad at first, the one day I picked up the wrong cup of tea (one with two spoonfulls of sugar in) and eewwwwww

Just stick with it and give your tastebuds a chance to get used to the taste.

I would usually use Roma brand of brown rice and wholemeal pasta. I usually flavour my rice with Tumeric and with the pasta I usually knock up some type of tomato based sauce.

    Best Regards,

    M

I changed over to the brown rice over two years ago, had problems digesting the white rice. You can get any amount of flavoured stock cubes (mushroom is my favourite) that you simply add to the water when you start cooking. Kalo is the brand I use, when I had stomach problems it was the one recommended to me as it has the most or least something or other (sorry, can't remember why).

In terms of the length of time that it takes to make, I generally make a big batch at the weekend, freeze it and bring it to work ( I have access to a freezer at work, luckily). Once it's cooled, put it into a large freezer bag, flattening it to about 2 cm's thickness. Once it's frozen you can just break off however much you need and place the rest back in the freezer.

I put it in a bowl, pour plenty hot water in and bang it in the microwave for 45 secs to 1 min. Drain the water and away you go. The rice can be a little soggy though.

I also converted to brown pasta a few months ago as I eat it everyday. At first I thought it tasted funny and the texture is different, it's tougher. But I started cooking it for a few extra minutes and that softened it up some more.

A while ago I ran out of the brown and had to use white pasta - hated it. I'd definitely prefer brown over white now that I'm used to it. And it even tastes healthy! Or maybe that's just some placebo effect...

For brown rice, brown basmati is best (though expensive). Wash it before boiling and throw a stock cube in with the water (I prefer chicken). Needs to be cooked a bit longer but it's nyom.

I used to have white rice all the time and yes the brown rice and brown pasta tasted different, but it defo tastes WAY less refined that their white counterparts.

    Stock cube, pfft.

    Bay leaf is all.

If you want to avoid eating processed food, grill some tomatoes and courgettes and whizz them up in a blender. Makes a natural, mild, nice tasting sauce for the pasta.

I think you know my rice tastes better than yours tbh. I think you'll be putting a chicken stock cube in your next pot of rice. Oh yes. I think so.

+1 with Khannie on the brown basmati and stock cube. ****ing delicous!!

White rice is way too stodgy and just sits as a lump in your stomach ... well i think so anyway.

Dont forget there is also red rice and wild rice which looks really nice when mixed into brown basmati....
I throw in less water and when the rice is half cooked add coconut milk.... NYOM!
and i add some dried basil in and it is good with home made tomato sauce and beef or turkey meat balls or chicken.

try adding in sauteed mushrooms once the rice is cooked and strained...

I've tried brown rice a few times and I still don't like it, bleeugh :(

Brown pasta is really quite alright and I have switched over to that now. Check out Roma or Bunalun. I will look out for spelt pasta next time and see what that's like.

I don't think people would notice the difference between regular and wholewheat pasta if you served it to them with a nice tasty sauce or pesto. :)
