When people speak of addiction, they usually refer to alcohol, drugs and fags but what about gambling? Is this not as great a scourge as any of the others?Has it not caused suicide, violence and even murder and yet u can place a bet as easy as buy a packet of fags.

Obviously people can become addicted to gambling, but I don't think this is the right place to discuss it.

Actually i think the gambling forum should always be open to discussion about gambling addiction.

Why not discuss addiction on gambling forums,I am punting years, and dont care as much for it now because the bottom line is that its not easy to win, but like everything else its personal choice. I Hate anti punting nazis who condemn betting and wouldnt have a clue about it, I wont be giving up anytime soon, there are ways to win, the best of which is to specialise on one sport, and remember bookies do make mistakes. I have no children so if I lose it only affects me, no one forces me to go to a bookies, if you have a problem dont gamble, but do gooders are worse, Im on the dole now anyway so I dont have a lot to lose

No, when people speak of chemical addiction they are referring to alcohol, drugs and fags, but most people are aware all sorts of things can be addictive, such as computer games, casual sex, and gambling. Basically, anything which causes some sort of emotional high.

The reason you are allowed to easily place a bet is because our society *in general* is based on personal responsibility.

I speak as a fairly unsuccessful punter but the important line is not to bet beyond ones means and unfortunately, this is not the case.We like to chase our losses hoping our next winner changes our luck.Life is not so simple. Most of us know when not to have another drink but with gambling, the urge to strike back is greater. If u take the next drink,u know u will suffer, maybe all night and the next day. With gambling, its the mind and pocket that are affected.I went to Kempton Park last evening, first time ever to horse racing over here.No luck of course.Nice experience but couldn't be pushed about going again. The choices in the bookies and online are greater without spending on travel, entry and food and drink;therefore more money to gamble.

now back to the forum topic.......any decent tip for today ?

    Topic here is gambling addiction.

As for the OP there are plenty of people who lose at betting and know this as fact. But they don't spend so much as to give themselves financial problems. If you do spend more than you can afford on a regular basis and can't feel the ability to stop doing so then there's always help out there.

I see nothing wrong with discussing it here. I have seen enough people that don't know when to stop in various casinos to know that some people have a real problem with it.

I don't think we'll cure it by discussing it here, but it won't harm either imo.

My reason for starting this thread was for debate. If only 1 person reading somebodys comment stops and thinks "yes,I have a problem with betting",then thats success.Sometimes I wonder myself if I fit into that category. Most times I am totally in control with my 50pe/w or £1e/w if I'm feeling lucky but there are times when I don't look in the rear view mirror and I start to chase.I lost £100 in i month recently. Not much you might say but take that in the context of bets that are NORMALLY £1 and start increasing with no success. So I say, enjoy your little punts but beware.

I recognised that I had an issue (not really a problem but I didnt like the direction I was going)

I didnt have any problem with my gambling as it was in waves - sometimes you win - sometimes you loose ...but thats gambling.....it was at the poin when I'd play Blackjack online when I was bored....in fairness I limited myself to €500 per day - most I have even won in a day was just under €3.5K (and did that a few times)....since I was limited to only using €500 of my own money I felt like I was normally up ......sometimes I would have made €1500 or more in a few hands then lost it all....but I always just kept saying that its only €500 gone.

I started selling stuff to clear the debts that I was building up.... and eventually I decided that I need to stop. Dont get me wrong, I'm not stopping gambling ....just online gambling as its too easy to loose money - now I have to make a conscious effort to go into a bookies or go into a casino (which makes you think twice)

I'm a single guy so the only person who was suffering was me - suffering isnt the right word but cant think of a suitable word.

I'm not a compulsive gambler (bet ya I'm not :p) more that I used to gamble out of boredom, its made available so easy these days....so now that I managed to identify it I just had to find a way to stop it - fortunately I still have a job and can work harder/more whenever I want - doesnt always make me money but keeps my mind occupied and my hands away from gambling websites.

in short..... gambling can be fun and adds excitement to sports (IMO)...its not designed for the punter to make money but theres always a chance and its the "hope" of making it rich...if someone wants to make money from it then its actually simple - focus on a lesser known sport and find a bookies that will take your bets....however dont be surprised when you are banned from a bookies (because you win too much !!!)

I would consider myself able to pick out a number of football games every now and again and I enjoy reading the "tips" on boards.... sometimes regretting not betting some of them as they sometimes win.

PS. the above about my life is the last 6months ... I have closed/asked sites to exclude me for 12months.... i believe it would be too hard to completely exclude gambling but think that reducing my access will allow me to think and using cash will allow me to see the money and think twice (I dont like betting big in a bookies - not brave enough to put €100 on a game .... €10 or €20 no problem)

Anyway - its been almost 10days since my last online bet - and I have only gambled €40 in a bookies on midweek games...didnt bet anything on start of premiership - even though I could see some bankers (stoke/sunderland/fulham) ...and also an interesting bet of "no red card" opening premiership weekend priced at 4/1.

    Happy Betting !

What can I say but well done.I think I can honestly say I bet out of boredom.I get reasonably well paid for what I do,lots of holidays, and oh yes,I work shifts.I have self excluded a few times but I find setting a limit is not a bad idea.Betting should be a recreation. If 1 could set an amount they will not pass for a day,a week or a month, nobody would suffer.

bet 365 allows you to set a limit - I think most of the online sites will set a limit (daily/weekly)

miseeire - what do you bet on ?

if you are happy with boredom betting - no problem,
if you are concerned ...set a limit.
if you are worried.... self exclusion/close accounts and stop online gambling

Gambling like everything else is good in moderation.

I never touch casino.Mainly horses, golf and football. As I said,no danger of a bookie banning me as my stakes,in the main, are minute compared to some.I just wish I could do something constructive with my spare time.Losing racing uk is 1 big help.I do have limits so I'm ok.
