I'm not sure if this is the correct thread but there it goes.My son has spent the last two years doing a Quantity Surveying degree. He took a year out last year and got full time employment working for a credit card company. He now wants to go back to collage,im not sure if its a great idea.He is leaving a good job to go back to collage, even tough collage is probably best what worries me is if he leaves his job nmow and goes back and get his degree, what the chances that he might not be able to get as a job with his degree, especially with the way the Construction industry is gone?any advice.

Does he want to continue working for a credit card company, or does he want to work in construction?

If it's the latter, he should go back to college...

he is the kind of person that would work anywhere but he would be happier working in construction but unfortunetly them days are over.I cant seeing there being anything major happening in construction around Ireland for the next 10 years.

Could he switch to night time version of his QS degree so he could continue working?

Yeah, I understand what you're saying, but a degree in itself is very valuable.

Personally I would take the risk and go back to college. Would he be able to continue working part-time in the credit card company, e.g. is it a call centre job he could do in the evenings?

ya it is a call centre but they already have all there evening staff covered. Its not so much about the money because i dont mind supporting him through collage. Is there a future in Quantity Surveying would be my biggest worry??

Well there will always be a need Quantity Surveyers, but you're right that it might be difficult to get a job.

However a degree is a great thing to have, and he'll be able to do a postgrad after it which will open more doors for him.

Personally I don't think working in a call centre is doable long term.

A degree is good. As said, it opens doors.

No degree, and when his job comes to an end, he's in the same boat as many many other people with no degree. Nothing to make him more employable over someone else...

Worst case scenario... If he goes back to college and completes his degree there may not be work in QS straight away. However, he will be better qualified and will find it easier to get a job in other industries if he's shown initiative by going back and re-educating while the industry was in a slump.

I think going back to study is the best option at the minute if you are either unemployed or in a job that you don't see as a career position.
