casual work cheques

    Hi guys,

So i finished working full-time at the start of june. I applied for Jobseekers allowance straight after, about a week after that i got casual work for a few weeks which i told my welfare office about in my desk interview. Just over a week ago i got a backdated cheque in my door. I was getting 130 per week after my means test. Since then the casual work finished and i left in a letter from the employer along with my last casual work cert. So today i got a cheque for the full amount of 204.30 in my door. I assumed that once i finished working i'd have to start going to the post office to receive my payments.

I was just wondering was it enough to leave in a letter or if i should call in and speak directly to someone regarding finishing the casual work. Has this happened to anyone else? I really don't fancy them turning around telling me i owe them money because i should never have received the cheque in the first place.

If you are fully unemployed then you will be entitled to a full weeks benefit payment of €204.30. What most likely will happen is that your pattern of being fully unemployed will be picked up after about 2 to 3 weeks, and you will automatically be switched to post office payments. You should get a letter out informing you of this, and this letter will also let you know your signing on arrangements.

You can, if you like, drop another note into the letter box of your social welfare office informing them that you are now fully unemployed. But if I were you, I would do nothing - after all it is probably more convenient for you to get a cheque payment posted out to you rather than a weekly que in the post office.
