I wouldn't do a virus scan online. Download Avast antivirus, and "Spybot S&D" and see what they find when you update them and run them on your machine.

Slowness of a computer doesn't have to be anything to do with a virus though. Run "Disk Clean-up" to get rid of temporary files. Check what you have loading at start-up: plenty of apps pre-load themselves at start-up so that if you choose to run them later on, they start up quicker. This would be fine, except that whatever time you save having them pre-loaded, you lose on boot-time delays.

Spybot S&D has a utility to clean out your start-up items. Remove anything you don't need.

If you're running XP on your PC, get Registry Mechanic and run that to fix up borked registry entries. Then get "OO Defrag" and do a proper intelligent defrag of your HD.

Finally, you can run "TuneUp Utilities 2009" to optimise your PCs performance.
