I have been looking for a quiet (most important) and cheapish 1 to 1.5TB drive for data storage on my htpc and came across this:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/1.5tb-hdd-caviar,2331-9.html

Its showing a 7200.12 1TB drive as being 36.1dba .... if this was true then it would be an ideal htpc drive. The icing on the cake is that it is quite a bit cheaper than the WD disks (£63.81 incl vat, excl p&p from scan)

The problem I am having is finding some corroborating evidence that it really is that quiet. Anyone here have one of the 7200.12 1TB disks and can hear it?

I know the 7200.11 disks had their problems, in fact I had a 1TB disk brick on me and had to be RMA'd ... no data lost, just lots of time reinstalling stuff and copying stuff back on to it (with all my digital pictures and stuff I make many copies on different computers)
So while I am a little gunshy on Seagate, the promised low noise and relative cheapness is interesting me.

I recently bought a maxtor 1.5TB drive (USB Ext Powered) and its very quiet, in fact i cant actually say ive heard it even spin up, its got a fast access rate and so on, so if your looking for a 1.5TB drive i`d reccomend that one (I got mine from maplins in blach shopping center for €151)

    Hi,

Got one of the 7200.12 1TB for a HTPC build for the brother in law. Excellent drive. Very quiet.

Well i went and ordered one and got it this week. Just waiting for a chance to install it now. I also ordered some bungee cord so i will be suspending the drive for extra quietness.....
