Another Rules Question

Guys, I just need something clarified, as this cropped up during a round the other day.

I play my shot from say 150 yards to green and end up off the green to the right in semi rough, my playing partner plays and ends up say 3 ft from the pin from the same area of the fairway.

I goto my ball, whilst my playing partner is strolling down the fairway. His ball is on the green and I play my shot. I chip my ball and it hits his ball. What is the ruling ? The competiton is stroke play and our assumption is a 1 stroke penalty for me and his ball to be replaced to where it was. Is this correct ?

When you say "playing partner" do you mean someone you played with or say a team event where he was on your team?
In either case in this scenario there is no penalty and the owner of the ball replaces it. Your ball stays where it is.
There is only a penalty if you were on the green when you hit another ball or anywhere through the green if you hit you, your own or your partners equipment.

When i say playing partner, i meant a fellow competitor, as in an open singles competition. Thanks for the response.

the only potential problem is if you asked him not to move it, in order to assist you. By the sounds of your response, that wasn't the case

No penalty, you just replace his ball to it's original position and play your own wherever it ended up.

Yes, but be careful. As per the rules, if the comittee determines that two players have agreed not to mark a ball in order to assist one of their approach shots, both players will be disqualified.

So the guy doesn't have to leg it up and mark the ball just incase it helps you. But, say, if he's walking over to mark it and you say "could you leave that there please", and he does so, you're liable to be DQ'd if it's heard by an official or fellow competitor.

You see it all the time when the a ball or balls can create a buffer either side of the hole. A lot of guys will choose not to mark it and say nothing. This is within the rules (nothing's been agreed). The problem arises when the guy chipping asks you to leave it there, ie: seeks agreement, in which case you need to mark your ball to avoid DQ yourself.

A little anecdote where something like this happened in our club.

A new member to the club was playing, and he bladed a chip, that hit the ball of his playing partner's full on that was beside the hole. His ball stopped dead while the other ball went flying off the green. His initial reaction was one of dismay and was apologising profusely to his playing partner until he was told that he should stop worrying and that his playing partner can replace his ball to where it was.

Obviously he was very relieved and then proceeded to pick up his own ball and throw it hard along the line that his ball would have went, while declaring, "this is where my ball would have gone"

Que, playing partners on the ground in hysterics......

    /rolls up sleeves

Actually no he isnt as he was not testing the green.

    Decision 16-2
It is a question of fact whether or not the player's action was for the purpose of testing the surface of the putting green.

I had this before where someone tried to penalize me for throwing/rolling an out of play ball back to a golf bag.
