    Hi All,

I received an Imac in work from a regional office, this iMac is to be used to test our web pages in Safari , but I don't have the admin password (as the developer left) and I don't have the original media to restore the machine.

So I'm wondering what are my options now ? I called Apple and the tech guy there said 'no you canot downlod the O.S.' and left the call (wtf like!!)

So I'm wondering is there a place whereby I can give the serial number , purchase order number and obtain a new O.S. dvd ?

Is the latest O.S. called Leopard ? , and there is an update to this due next month called Snow Leopard ??? just so I ask for the right software.

many thanks for any help ,

    Fionn

I don't think there's anyway around this except to boot from an install disc. Apple used to provide replacement discs for a small fee. I'm not sure if this is still the case. You'd have to ring them and ask. You'd need the serial number at least. It would be the original discs though, not the latest version of the OS.

Yeah, Snow Leopard is out next month. It'll cost 30 euro. However, it's an upgrade disc and will require that Leopard already be installed. Details on this are bit vague at the moment though.

 Not so small after all.

In that case, OP, you might be better off waiting for Snow Leopard - if you can wait that long and the Mac is compatible.

I've reset the admin password on an eMac using a Leopard disc. Did they step up the security on more recent models?

Mactivate might be able to help out in Blanchardstown ,being an authorised apple repair centre , ( I heard mixed reviews and had bad service myself from them ) but they proabably have all the discs etc you need

Snow Leopard will only work on Intel Machines , so if its an Imac G5 etc tiger or leopard is your only route

if the machine is still in warranty, Apple will give/sell you a replacement disk. If out of warranty, you have to buy like any regular punter. If it's a PowerPC based machine, you'd best buy Leopard quick before they can it in favour of 10.6.

I have an older G4 powerbook that needed the OS redoing. It doesn't support 10.5, and they don't sell 10.4 any more. Cue trawl of tinternet for alternative.
