Anyone used Tescos car oil, the fully synthetic 5w-40 type?

If so, how does it compare with the big brands?

I would suggest that like the petrol and own brand products in general it's cheap and nasty

    That's a sweeping generalisation.

As long as the oil is SAE approved to a standard required by the car manufacturer then in theory it's as good as any other approved oil.

Stick with a good branded product if you value your engine IMHO.

Although I do take JHMEG's point into account I have to agree with the above. Oil is one thing you shouldn't be trying to save a few quid on.

Well, my guess is that it's probably the same thing. Do you really think that Tesco has it's own refinery that produces automotive oil for them only?

    Neither do I.

No, but they have quality control issues, Remember this:

Tesco oil vs Maxol petrol. People have no problem using Maxol petrol even tho it's not produced by the tiny family-owned company that only imports and sells the stuff.

Tesco oil would be the same. Why not use it if it has been approved?
