I am currently on jobseekers benefit and am looking at setting up a Limited Liability Company for the purposes of opening a retail outlet.

Setting up the company, leasing a premises and setting up the retail outlet will take up to a couple of months. If I register the company, with me as a director, will I then be inelligable for benefit even though the company will not be in a position to trade for two or three months?

My spouse will be the other director of the company and I was wondering if this would affect her eligability for JB if she were to loose her current job? My spouse would be a director but not an employee of the company. i.e she would not be drawing a wage for it.

It is best to ask your Social Welfare office. I would also recommend you go to one of the Open Coffee Meetings. These are get togethers organised by individuals who have started their own business. They will be able to share Their experiences with you

Fire off a mail to them and ask when their next meeting is.

You could also enquire at your local Social Welfare Office regarding Back to Work Enterprise scheme.
In regards to Jobseeker's Benefit claim, you would have to declare any days you work in your business in regards to setting it up etc. and would not receive payment for these days.
