    Hi Folks,

Hoping to head to twisted pepper this friday and bring a few friends. I know appleblim is on that night but is there going to drum n bass on that night too? Not a huge fan of dubstep

Don't hate it or anything. I like listening to it at home the odd time. I thought Caspa and Rusko's mix for fabric was deadly. I'm just not convinced it's great night club music, I find a lot of it too slow to dance to. There's some great stuff there but i've just heard a lot of bad stuff that sounds like drum n bass on heroin. Having said that I did enjoy gaslamp killer the last time he played over here, he was really good fun. If more of it sounded like that, I'd probably be more convinced. And who knows maybe Appleblim will convert me completely.

I think I'm just a bit wary about returning to the twisted pepper and dragging friends along with me after being at kid 606's night last month. That was really horrendously awful

    How bad was kid606?

    How bad was kid606?

He was pretty dire. Really bad mixing. Didn't seem to be able to sync up tracks a lot of the time. and he spent a lot of time mixing random stuff together that just didn't work. And every now and again, he'd stop the music and just start screaming into the microphone. it was a real buzz kill. I wanted to leave after about half an hour but I kind of had to stick around for one of my friends.

it was the djing equivalent of tommy tiernan. someone striving so hard to be taken seriously they've forgotten how to entertain

Kid 606 is brutal, very glad i stayed in for that one...

Appleblim will be well worth a look; his stuff is quite rhythmically busy and techno influenced so it's not plodding halfstep bangers, there's enough variety in there to keep it interesting... If you or any of your mates like techno they'll probably love Appleblim.

    Pop down and say hello!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭Nedermeyer

I heard KID 606 was a bit dissapointing alright. I too, am glad i stayed in.

I think your point about dubstep not being great club music is something that a lot of people think of the genre until they get to go to a truly dirty, filthy bass riddled dungeon with wall to wall bodies ! HAHAHAHA .

As regards caspa and rusko, I love dubstep but I wouldn't be their biggest fan. Caspa has one or two good tunes , Rusko is a bit too 'garagey' or something for me , I just can't get REALLY into it.

You're right about the gaslampkiller though, he was deadly ~ the set from that night is available on the RBMA website ~ the gaslampkiller shouted out most of the names of the peoples' tracks he was playing that night, so you could listen to it and look up some of the artists if that's your bag. I got to see him play room one in fabric a few months after ! And there's loads of stuff that sounds like that if you wanted to listen to it !

I assume you listen to the Mary Anne Hobbs show on BBC Radio One ? She plays LOADS of that 'west coast sound' dubstep/glitch-hop/electronica MUSAK !! :D

He was shocking. and there was no where to escape because they had some crappy battle of the bands thing followed by an indie disco upstairs.

Hey you're from reach. What's the story? Will it just be all dubstep that night or will there drum n bass down in the basement?

I've yet to experience this. No one seems to dance at any dubstep night I've been to.

I'd find it hard to NOT dance at a dubstep night tbh. . . .

The gaslampkiller's new EP "My troubled mind" is now available on Brainfeeder digital. http://www.brainfeedersite.com/2009/08/04/the-gaslamp-killer-my-troubled-mind-ep/

Mary Anne Hobbs show is brilliant. She showcases lots of new stuff WAY before it's released. you can download her show over at www.deepgoa.com ~ Just click the Mary Anne Hobbs tag on the blog.

sound, I'll have to check that ep out.

What do you reckon of Skream's stuff? Bit undecided about him. Some of his stuff's kind of enjoyable, some of it's really dull. Plus he was absolute gash when he did that gig at the iveagh gardens. What's the story with all the rewinds?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭Nedermeyer

I'm not big on Skream either tbh, but id id hear he put on a fine show last year in the tp. Saw him in fabric earlier in the year and he was a bit of a buzz kill , really bland and un-exciting.

The rewinds thing bugs the hell out of me. There's a possibility someone will flip because i've just said that, and i definitely would be shot down on www.dubstepforum.com , but I gotta stick by it.

For people reading this thread who don't know what's being referred to , my understanding of a rewind is thus :

A dubstep Dj rewinds the record back a good bit if he likes it or wants to pay homage to the artist who made the track. the more times it's done, the more he respects that person.

I personally think it's Bol*x. When was the last time you were at home and put the same song on 3/4 times in a row ?

    Exactly.

I think what's really annoying about them is that just as a song is building up and getting really good, they stop and go back to the start. Complete buzzkill. Completely, wrecks the whole flow of the thing. He kept doing it at that iveagh gardens gig, nearly got booed off the stage for it. Plus he was langered drunk and kept talking boll*x for most of the night instead of playing tunes. I think that gig is one of the main reasons I'm still finding it hard to warm to dubstep

You're saying that on dubstep forum, you'd get a lot of stick for saying that? No offence, but doesn't say much for serious dubstep heads

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭Nedermeyer

I dunno tbh, it's just one of those things, you often see people saying stuff like : "He pulled it back twice, animal tune " ~ I just don't get it.

Anyway, you said you're gonna go to the Appleblim gig ? it should be a good solid night, and Joker is playing in the tp next friday the 21st aswell .

just read that article about joker. I do remember getting a world's heaviest dubstep compilation with a tune by him called stay in the system. Savage tune. Definitely the stand out. I can see what they're talking about when they say he's bringing melody to it

Hey Whiterob, there's a good video here :

It's a preview for the Mary Anne Hobbs compilation forthcomin on planet mu, it's a good idea of what to expect on the show, it's kinda like a 'best of' of 2009 so far.
