not sure if the is the right place to post this, mod feel free to move it to a better spot:)

Ive got swine flu (yippee) and its swolen up some glands in my throat, making it painfully hard to swallow. even liquids. ive also completely lost my appetite, to a point that i havent eaten a single thing in (checks time)
57 hours. and i dont really feel hungry at all.

anyway i was wondering whats keeping me alive atm, am i using fat stored in my body or breaking down muscle?

my mom brought me some soup earlyier to eat, as its liquid, but its still going to be quite an affair trying to eat it, and tbh id rather not go through the pain.

and it couldnt hurt losing a bit of fat, right?? i just cant afford to lose muscle as im a competitive kayaker so it will kinda mess me up.

am i burning fat or should i eat the soup?

Yes you're burning fat, your body will be in starvation mode now.
Eat the soup or get your mum to make you ice cream milkshakes or buy 'complan' in your local pharmacy. At least if it's cold it should be a bit easier to swallow.

    thanks for the quick reply!

what is complan? is it a food suppliment in a pill or similar? im taking so many atm that ive almost gotten used to the pain i get from swallowing them, so that would be great.

Complan is a powder formula that you add milk or water to. Can be taken hot or cold and it's available in several flavours (sweet and savoury, as far as I know). It contains a fairly comprehensive range of nutrients.

    Get better soon!

You are losing fat. If it goes on for a long time, you'll lose some muscle too, but we hope you'll be back eating before then. As well as Complan or Ensure, you can also get protein drinks that are pretty much pure protein and just liquid, not a shake. Getting some of those down would help.

    Can you manage jelly?

Hi Op, you should really ask your doctor if you should attempt to eat or not and if so what type of foods ... If you dont feel hungry then I wouldnt worry about it as long as it doesnt go on for too long ... You are unlikely to loose too much muscle as I presume your activity levels are also low at present?
hope you get well soon :)

Ill give my doc a call tomorrow morning. still not hungry but i ate some soup last night. it actually gave me stomach cramps, but i figured that was normal because of being without food for so long, little over 60 hours. ill try eat again today.

thanks for the support and info guys. you're all stars in my book!
