I've been getting this error alot when using a 3 week old seagate 1TB external hard disk that i bought in pc world. A quick search tells me the drive is ****ed but i didn't keep the box or receipt so I'm hoping its fixable. Any ideas??

Anytime I've seen this error it has related to a specific file rather than the HD itself.

My own experience with it was with CD/DVD images where the image became corupt for one of serveral reasons.

Seagate and Hitachi have a utility on their site for checking drives, If I remember it is an iso with which you make a bootable cd and then you can run various test directly on the drive.

If you bought the drive using a credit/laser card, the store could search for a receipt based on the card no. as least that's what i used to do sometimes when i worked there. Besides that if they took any details from you (i.e.name, address) at the till they might be able to search on that instead.

    Thanks,
I'm running the utility now and its after finding 100's of errors already. I'll definitely be sending it back.

    Cheers, hadn't thought of that.
Would they take it back without the box? I can send it back to seagate if i have to, but I don't want to have to wait for the replacement.
