weight loss

    Just signed up to a new gym, basically for weight loss and toning up. I've being given a circuit training programme which is good but I feel as if I could do more afterwards. Then I'm doing a powerwalk for half an hour.., now before I started the new gym I was doing 10k runs in an hour. The man explained if I want to lose weight then I have to keep my heart rate between 110 and 140 and if I go Jogging or running my heart rate is going higher and therefore burning of muscle instead of fat, is this true, have I being waisting my time running for weight loss?

    Hey daithi09,

    I've got a little tip for you. Ask the man who did up your programme and advised against getting your heart rate up high if he has ever seen or heard of this guy

    But I'm thinking maybe if I lose weight first then increase speed and over all fitness.. not sure how it works tho, just lookiong for advicce.. yeah thats the look I'm going for but my abs are well burried under a sea of crap food and beer, both of which I gave up...And if I feel as if I can more of the circuit training should I do it again, currently doing circuit three times, think I could push four...

    So is this heart rate thingy true or not? I do not want to be waisting my time walking if it does no good for me...? should I just splash out and get a personal trainer, I need results..

    The HR zone your trainer specified is commonly known as 'fat burning zone' in the fact that you specifically are burning fat calories but the higher you get your heart rate the better? Why? BECAUSE YOU BURN MORE OVERALL CALORIES.

    Result of more burned calories = more weight loss.

    Your trainer is an idiot. get a new one.

    Get a decent lifting program maybe like

    and do cardio on other days like running/cycling/rowing.

    Sorry to tell you but no amount of exercise will compensate for crap food intake.

    But since you mentioned that you gave up junk food and beer ,would you post

    your daily diet? Coming back about the workouts perhaps HIIT will be any use to you

    Your instructor is absoloutly right.If your heart rate goes any higher it will be burning energy from the recent food you have eaten,water and muscle.Keeping it in between those numbers will burn fat.

    Well then, are you aware that a fairly up to date Personal Trainer/ Fitness professional, who probably knows a bit more than you, said it was wrong?

    For the second time,yes I did read back and I saw that people were saying the instructor was wrong so I added my bit in.Is two answers to the same question enough or are you going to go for another?

    Yes but if he gets his HR higher he will burn more calories, lose weight quicker, become leaner and boost his aerobic capacity much quicker.

    Interval training and more intense programs like HIIT are much more effective and the after burn effects means he will burn yet again more calories than if he had kept his HR at a lower level. Fat burning zone is long gone and it so 90's!

    I know what your saying but I still believe some one starting off a new circuit should stay in around that heart rate level for a while before they go all out.When he goes all out the fitter he gets the more calories he burns so yes your right in that respect but I think its better to do it gradually and not jump right in and have a heart attack.

    Thats just my way of thinking.You may think im wrong but its not going to change my mind.

    If he overtrains consistantly, he might burn muscle, that is if he over trains catastrophically.

    If you train over the "fat burning zone" you will fatigue quickly.
    Thats all.

    Interval training is nearly the same thing.Getting your heart rate up and then dropping it.In my experience im normally doing it in around the fat burn zone anyway without trying to.

    to my knowledge you should keep your heart rate to 60 -70 or 75% higher than normal during your cardio. not more
    cardio 3 times a week
    also do strength training to build muscle as you'll burn more fat
    you need a healthy diet as well. important to eat often, every 3 hours, and cut down on carbs. get your carbs after the work out

    i think your plan will depend on things like your current level of fitness and how much you have to lose if you have a long way to go i think starting off with a good power walk, rowing, cross trainer and bike or whatever is enough really no exercise will be bad. if you have a lot of weight to lose it would be no bad thing to stay away from the impact stuff. sticking at it is what you should concentrate on. but if you are a couple of stone overweight and relatively fit the running should be no problem whatever your situation i wish you the best.

    I'd like to clarify if OP said he had a bit of weight.
    He also said that he did 10K runs too.

    So I deduce he is not morbidly obese and running should be a lot better than power walking. Which will be of virtually no use as hi body adapts to the stresses of powerwalking.

    I disagree. HIIT is much more on a higher anaerobic plate than interval training.

    Did you say that when you do interval training it's in teh fat burn zone? If so, your not getting your HR high enough.

    hey, sorry with the long delay..I'm fourteen stone, 5'11''.. I'm not too much overweight but I was a carpenter before this recession hit and I've lost an awful lot of muscle since last year, So i got a belly and just generally pudgy.. the 10k runs are only on a treadmill and my heart rate is usually at 170-180 over the hour. My diet was pretty bad but I've cut out take aways and now trying to stick to protein foods(which I'm finding very difficult because of limited amount of meals I can think of making, beginning to smell like tuna at this stage).. I'm eating small often also, so maybe porridge for breakfast at 8, then bout 10 an apple and tea, at 1 i'd have soup, then another fruit(bannana, orange)at three, around six I have my chicken fillet/steak/tuna and after traing more tuna or beans.. I'm trying to get a decent body by christmas so looking for the best training regime going, thinking of hiring a personal trainer once a week just to write up programmes for me, because obviously the man in the gym is not very good... Are personal trainers worth the money? all criticism welcome thanks

    My zone if 143 to 172 and I usually am around the 170-180 mark so not far off.

    im no expert but omg you dont seem to be eating a lot.. did you read the stickies? they're really good if you have a couple of hours to spare..

    Yes I might post pictures of myself on a weekly basis, diet and workout programmes, which I plan on changing once a month.. pics will be without my face, mainly because of embarrassment, maybe if I get a decent body someday I'l post my face..thanks everybody,

    should I post stuff here, or start a fitness log. Went back to trainer in gym today and he give me a new diet plan, told me I needed some carbs but still not taking any after four. I'm going to give him the benifet of the doubt with the heart rate thing and see how his way is working after first month or so. hopefully I'l get fitness log started by the end of the week..
