Mods: if this type of post is not allowed, I apologise.

I run a couple of jobsites, and I'd like to improve them based on feedback on how people use jobsites.

When you're searching for a job, do you:
    • search using some keywords
    • browse all jobs
    • browse by category
    • browse by location
    • browse by category and location
    • browse by category and location and use some keywords
    • Something else?

Also, do you use the "employers only" radio button or do you look at both the employer and agency jobs?

    Thanks in advance for reading.

Keywords only relating to specific IT certifications

I usually just browse by category. Location doesn't really matter for me. If a job site has an RSS feed, I'll just grab that and scan the jobs as they appear in my RSS reader or maybe filter a bunch of feeds through Yahoo Pipes to parse them for certain keywords that I'm interested in.

One major suggestion I would have is an option to filter out jobs that require a foreign language. It seems like 60-70% of IT support jobs out there right now require a language. It's a big time waster to have to go through all those.

Usually browse by location (Dublin) first (I'm that desperate I'll take anything lol!), or sometimes browse by category if there are a lot of jobs listed under location. I check every day though, so usually it is just under location. I usually avoid searching as jobs can be listed under different titles (e.g. sales assistant / sales staff / customer service etc.) and so I feel by searching I may miss out on jobs which were listed using different terms if that makes sense.

    Same as the others really.

I firstly click the general industry tab.

Then look at the positions on my level.

    Usually without agency jobs aswell.

For sites like jobs.ie Im at the stage that I search every newly posted job without any criteria (industry, location etc) cos Im that forking desperate.

I first click the button that gets rid of the lying assh$$es\ scam artists recruitment agencies. Then I browse by catogory. Also it would be nice to divide the jobs that require a second language. It gets a bit head wrecking scanning through loads of jobs and they all require you to speak loads of different languages. This is especially true if your looking for customer service\ it support roles.

Company only ( you don't seem to have that option AARGH or am I missing it?)
Then go by most recent ( as I check every day).

being able to get rid of a 2nd language requirement is a good idea.

    Keyword(s) and location

... and these days - company only - that amount of crap being posted by certain agencies is disgraceful.

... and make sure "C#" works as a search term - some sites have/had problems with it.

    D.

Location only, then I browse the results that come back - I'll consider anything at the moment.

I hate the sites that will ONLY display the results by category, like do they seriously expect me to search through all the categories just in case on job got mis-filed?

The majority of jobs aren't advertised.

I say get the name of hiring mangers in 100 or so companies and email them your CV. Works for me :)

For me it's browse by category and location and use some keywords.
I'd normally search both with and without recruiters.

Also make sure you allow a sort by date added feature, as it's very handy when you check every day or 2
