Kylemore Road stone throwers

I was heading north on Kylemore Road earlier this evening and had a couple of sizable stones thrown at me by some kids (also sizable) standing inside the railings of the halting site at the corner of Labre Park. It's on your left just after you come over the canal (here).

No injury or damage done, thankfully (that and the fact that the eldest of them looked about twelve is why I didn't call the guards, although I thought about it).

It may well be a regular occurence (I don't cycle that way very often) just thought I'd post this as a warning to anyone who cycles past there.

On a related point, can anyone recommend a route from Dublin 15 across to Stocking Lane that would allow me to avoid the Kylemore Road? Aside from the stone-chucking neanderthals (southsiders...tsk :D) the surface of the road is woeful.

I usually jump on to the Kylemore road about half a mile down the road from where that happened and have never had a problem. I've never past the halting site on my rothar so not sure if it would be a regular occurence. What's yoru exact route? Are you coming through Phoenix Park or the back of Lucan?

Carpenterstown, down Knockmaroon Hill, across through Chapelizod, up the hill and left onto the Kylemore Road. Pretty much straight out from there until I turn right onto Grove Road/Cypress Grove Road and across to Ballyboden Road.

I was aiming for what looked like the most direct route - arriving at the bottom of Stocking Lane already knackered is not the best :)

Balls, that's my preferred route. I hadn't noticed a halting site, but then I am the least observant person ever. Maybe they've been throwing stones at me too?

Do you think there's anything on your bike they're finding objectionable? Non-matching bottle cages maybe?

    Maybe this? Still pretty direct.

Ah, I was on a trufflehuntermobile - that must be it. So you're probably safe enough. It might well have been a one off - I can't remember the last time I went past there.

Thanks, might give that a shot and see how the distance compares. I could try cutting through the back streets off that one, but it might be complicated - that's a fair reason to buy a Garmin 705, yeah?? :)

This is the route I take to get to Stocking Lane. Similar enough to Kinetic^'s route.

I live near there, I cycle on the path opposite when passing that place as it is a very common occurance. Last year a large wine bottle was thrown at me and whizzed past my head smashing on the ground beside me, the shards of which I could feel on my legs. I still cycle past frequently but I look directly into that kip as I pass.
    Animals tbh.

You simply have to wear the Kaiku kit the next time you go that way.

I've passed by that halting site a few times and never had a problem, having said that it's usually during school hours that I cycle along there so it might be a bit quieter at that time.

bunnyhopper, i avoid that area like the plague but sometimes have to commute by it. If going from mtns to D15 - I usually go out west via citywest or jobstown (depneding on where I was) then ringroad to Lucan. Good bike path too.
I assume that if you're going to Stocking lane, you could loop arnd and take a westerly type route back?
If not buy a gun and shoot the little buggers:cool:

I have a vision of a bunch of traveller kids in Kaiku kit sitting round the table in a caravan discussing practical steps for increasing the take-up of drop handlebars amongst road-going cyclists.

I've cycled past it many times, never a problem.
That's not to say it doesn't happen too.

Last time I passed the council seemed to laying a new path along the Grand Canal, looks good :)

Certainly a worthy conversation to have.

Sounds as if it's a matter of luck and timing. I think I'll try a couple of the alternative routes suggested, and if I do go back that way I'll just have to be more vigilant. It's a bit unnerving to have a small rock glance off your thigh - they could do some damage if they had better aim.

somehow I think school hours aren't too relevant where these animals are concerned

What about getting one of these:-

    guns-and-bikes.jpg

It's retro, euro and comes with equipped to address the stone throwing issue directly.

It even looks like it's a hipster fixie/ss.

Are there Euro rules about rifles? Mauser and Lee Enfield are permitted, but none of your Smith & Wesson?

Pistolas must be manufactured from fingers, and may only be used on celebrating a stage win, either crossing the line or on the podium.

If it connects with your nose or your skull and you fall off only to hit it again. It does happen.
