I am looking to get a HD box for the upstairs living room and I just wanted to know which was the better option. I already have a SKY+ reciever in the main living room but I dont want a multiroom sub for the SKY+ HD reciever if I go for that option because for the moment I just want the Freesat channels.

Which do you think is the better option?
The Humax is very tempting but its 318 euro delivered where as I can get a SKY+ HD one delveried for around 200 euro

Also would I be right in saying that if I went for the SKY+ HD box, I would have to ring up Sky and ask them to enable the recording abilty?

Which is best for HD/Freesat? 29 votes

I'd go for the Humax as you can't record with Sky+ without a subscription.

    Some other thoughts here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=60249006&postcount=5

Have a look out on adverts.ie and elsewhere- I picked up a Humax there secondhand for 50% of the retail price.....

    Or one of these - http://www.saortv.com/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=2 - for €200.

Only 1 satellite input so you can't record one channel and watch another, but other than that it does the business for me. Or at least it has done it for the last 2 days I've had it.

Yes, but does it have any EPG other than now/next?

If not it's kind of pointless/awkward as a satellite PVR.

Whether you ask this here or on AV Forums... ;)... I bet you the answer will be the same, the Humax HDR, purely because it records without subscription, a non-subscription Sky+HD STB won't do anything unless you pay Sky, and is even limited in it's software and won't tune in HD channels broadcast at 29500, so if a FTA channels launched that wasn't on the Sky EPG, you won't get it.

The Humax is expensive, but from what I hear, is well worth it.

The compression is decided by the Broadcaster, not the receiver.

I bought my Humax HDR from Richersounds last May and IT IS THE BUSINESS!!!! I love it, being able to scroll through the 7 day epg, doing one touch recording and then leave it to do its thing and then watch your recorded movies/Top Gear etc at your leisure. The other features like pausing, rewinding live tv, is a major plus if you have kids (like me) who tend to want your immediate attention when something you are watching is on. Can't recommend it enough. Even my Dad who's a major technophobe wants to get one now. Oh and the HD picture from BBC is crystal clear. The athletics looks amazing on it.

Can the Humax be relayed to other TVs (similar to a Sky box's RF2 / Sky Eye setup) ?

    byte

Well, the Freesat boxes don't have RF modulators, so no distribution over coaxial cable unless you get a seperate UHF modulator. If you've a VCR, loop Freesat box thru that, relying on VCR to do the modulating.

Or AV over ethernet sorta stuff...

Thanks byte! I'd guess you lose the "remote" remote controls though.....balls!

Looks like I'm stuck with Sky (complete with subscription costs, crap unconsumer-friendly EPG, and the pathetic "Other Channels" workaround)

You could attach an RF modulator and a TVLink Plus.
