Those PS2 games are Suikoden Tactics, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. And they will soon be joined by Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4.

So if you haven't picked up ZOE2, MGS 2 and 3 or Silent Hill 2 then you owe it to yourself to pick. I'd especially advise picking up ZoE 2 since it was over looked by nearly everyone when it came out and is once of the best action games of last generation.

No sign of MGS 3 subsistence?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It could be the subsistence version but without the extra content. No confirmation of it though.

Wonder will they have any upscaling done to them or will they be just straight copies.

Ive the original PS3 so id be better off picking them up in the used section for half nothing.

I loved that game. It scared the cr*p out of me when I played it in surround sound with the lights off.....

Then I remembered it can't actually hurt me :D

Can attest to this myself, was in Gamestop Portlaoise and had brand new copies of MGS2: Substance, MGS3:Snake Eater (why not subsistence, I wants it so bad) and Silent Hill 2/3/4 all for €15 a piece but no sign of ZOE2 or Suikoden tactics though.

Retr0gamer - Have you had any confirmation on the budget disc content: Normal or Subsistence?

As it's a Konami reissue...I can't help but feel if it is 'Subsistence'...after the success of MGS4 (which used the new camera)...it would walk off the shelves and make them a lot more money as the word spreads on internet forums like this!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Can't confirm it sorry. However I've only ever played snake eater can can say that moveable camera or not it's a damn good game and should be picked up regardless.

Thanks Retr0gamer. You're right...should be picked up. However, having played both versions...you really do owe it to yourself to play Subsistence even if you've played the 'normal' version a million times. It's like a masterpiece made even better when you thought that could never be possible!

Way better. Resident Evil 1 is a masterpiece in schlock z-grade zombie horror. Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece in storytelling and psychological horror. It's a real art house game.

Ah c'mon, RE was brilliant. I played it on the Gamecube and thought it was unbelievable, far better than it's sequels.
Think I'll pick up a copy of silent hill 2 then :D

Sorry for this off thread question, but how rare is MGS3: Subsistance? Because there's a shop in Cork City that's selling it for €50.

Anyway I'd love to see the ZOE series back. Will definately pick up no. 2 :pac:

I agree Resident Evil is a fantastic game. However Silent Hill 2 is something else altogether. Every element from the shape of the enviroment to the enemy design is created to tie in with the story which is incredibly abstract but fascinating and all come together in the end. It's a different game to resident evil though. Resi is a lot more combat focused. Silent Hill has awful combat but it's focus is creating the atmosphere and telling it's story.

The PAL version of Subsistence seems to be very rare and goes for around 50 stingers usually.

For me Silent Hill is a bit like ICO or SOTC. You don't really appreciate the game until you look back on it and think. They aren't that much "fun" to play IMO with dodge controls.

Resident Evil one is the reason I bought a Playstation. Outstanding fun but you rarely look back at it as a storytelling masterpiece.

I was in Gamestop in Clare Hall the other day, chatting to a mate who works there, and they have indeed rereleased a ton of classic PS2 games, MGS, Ico, SOTC, Silent Hill series all brand new and around 19.99, pretty great value if you ask me.

And, like literature and film, games don't have to "entertain" in the slapstick mold, they don't have to provide action movie style excitement to grab your attention all the time.
Silent Hill 2 was a slow descent into true horror, as your awareness of where you are and why is taken away and then, cruelly, illuminated for you.
Same in Ico, where the "fun" is the clambering and path finding but this is tempered by the need to care for your charge, running to her aid when her cry is heard, the sensation of being only slightly in control of greater event is always present.
SOTC is more movie like in it's action, the slaying of the Collosii is, arguably, some of the most exciting action put into a videogame but unexpected then is the sense of loss when a beast is felled, the sense of you as the beast, and the overall sense of loneliness throughout the game, whilst you have a constant companion in Ico, in SOTC, you have no such company, only your horse, your dead love and the beasts you dispatch mercilessly.

    Good stuff, no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,727 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I really hope they keep the existing score if they do make the SOTC movie. I want to hear this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpTFCEdiqMk

in a Cinema screen as the Hero(?) rides towards one of the bigger Colossi at breakneck speed.

I really want to direct/star in this movie if it goes ahead.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

They'll **** it up. And even if they make a good movie out of it they won't match the game since i relies on the interaction element to make you care more about your actions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,727 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I think it would have to be short, you can't show all 16 Colossi getting pwned (OMGZ) but rather a selection. Youd still keep the major scenes, perhaps throw in the more unique Colossi (a flying one, a swimming one etc), keep the entire scene for the last one (finding the enclosed area, the death of ........, and the climb).

Music couldn't be more important in a movie where the protaganist is going to be silent.

Finnaly you can walk into a shop and buy games that are over 4 years old new! I wish games were sold a bit more like CDs

All this talk has motivated me to start playing that copy of Silent Hill 2 i bought on ebay a few months back. I turned off the lights and turned up the sound. So far 2 hours in and proud that I've managed to keep my boxers the same colour (although there have been a few close calls).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 77 ✭✭tampler

Was wondering why I found a few new copies of Zone of the Enders on ebay and in shops. I bought it of course. :p Loved the first one (even though it was short) and was annoyed when I missed out on the 2nd one.

only reason i can think of why its the normal version of Metal gear Solid 3 and not Subsistance is because Online play was a major selling point of subsistance, and since online play was shut down a while ago, would be no real point selling subsistance when internet play is gone, and where the only difference between that and the normal edition is the camera (At least I think its just the camera, I cant remember if monkey mode was in the normal release or not) and that badly done Disc which contained all the games cut scenes.

Of course, thats just me thinking and Konami may have their own reasons of course.

Never played Silent Hill 2 before (in fact, I have never played a silent hill game before) so I might pick it up, since I've heard such great things about it.

You're in for a treat since ZOE 2 is about 100 times better than the first game. It really is excellent. As for MGS3 I think it could be subsistence since the online game was included on a seperate disc I think? Could just be the subsistence disk without the other extras discs.

Buy Silent Hill 2 immediately. You don't need to have played the first either since it's a standalone game.

Bought SOTC today... delighted tbh... it'll keep me happy till the last guardian anyway!

Also just wondering can you download ps2 support on your ps3 or does it just come with it?

    Unless you own a 60GB PS3 then your ps3 can't play ps2 games.

I remember buying a double disc edition of Silent Hill 2 when it was released. Definitely the best horror game ever made , nothing has come close even on the current gen systems.

I need to pick this up again. I have MGS2 and 3 and SOTC. I might pick up ZOE2 if i can get it. Ill pop into Henry Street and have a look.

I need to get FF8 as well. So expensive online..maybe it might be released on PSN..fingers crossed.

It's not great and certainly not worth the stupid prices it goes for online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,727 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Its defo worth a playthrough but I wouldn't pay more than 30e on it.

Who knows what the story is with the other FFs appearing on PSN - I would be surprised if they demand the same price of 10e though, they could make the bandwitdth argument I suppose but there defo will not be the same demand for 8 and 9.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I wouldn't be surprised if it turns up on PSN. FFVII has made great business for Square enix and if there's anything square likes, it's easy money for minimum effort.

So just to follow up from this. Went into gamestop last weekend, and got myself Silent Hill 2. Also Got a copy of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus (with the announcment of a new game in the series, I think sony must be reprinting those 2 games)

They also had Metal Gear Solid 3, and Silent Hill 3 and 4 there too. Also, Gamestop had a "Buy 2 get one free" deal on as well. So its all good :P

Aint played much of them just yet, been a bit busy, but Silent Hill 2 looks like its gonna be good (Im gonna take up the challenge of playing it with the lights off, in the dark....with the volume turned up O.o )

Looking forward to playing ico and Shadow of the Colossus too. I heard SotC had a epic soundtrack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭macpac26

Was in gamestop yesterday no copies of Ico left. If anyone spots a copy of it could they post here.

Picked up Silent Hill 2 though so not a complete waste.

Also walked down to Game Exchange in Talbot St and they have feck all PS2 games. Game had no decent PS2 games either.

I managed to find cheap copies of MGS 2 (Platinum) & MGS 3-Substance last year.

I was never big into the Silent Hill series for fear of fear but after watching all those zero punctuation reviews of late I just reserved a copy of Silent Hill 2 in GameStop. €15, nice one!

Also +1 Shadow of the Colossus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,727 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Was down on Gamestop Henry Street.

MG3: Its just the normal version I think (I should say that all these reissues have copyright dates that go up to 2009 though). They had one for 15e.

Silent Hill 2: Had it for 15e

Shadow of the Colossus for a staggering 30e. Bit poxy, no doubt someone will pay it but it wasn't me. It is there though.

edit: the room (Silent Hill 4?) was there too but I missed the price.

Valkyria Chronicles for 35e brand new by the way for all those foolish enough not to have played it.

So far this weekend ive managed to pick up copies of:

Silent Hill 2 : Directors Cut
    Final Fantasy X
    Silent Hill 3
    Silent Hill 4
    MGS2 : Substance

Really chuffed about finding FFX , its my personal favourite, got it in Game in Blanch for 6 euro! BARGAIN! Its so damn hard to find aswell ive been looking for it for about 6 weeks. Also getting the directors cut edition of SH2 was a real surprise! It was 14 euro though but im playing through it now and its amazing!

SH3/4 and MGS2 were in the 3 for 2 offer in Gamestop in Blanch. Never played SH3 or 4 so looking forward to it. I already have MGS2 but i picked it as the free game as ive never played the skateboarding thing

All in all a good weekend..
