    Hi All,

We decided in another thread to do a Ladies Lounge book Club, maybe choosing a mook every month or so (or longer if people prefer) and then reading it together and discuss online.

Lots of great suggestions but we had decided to look originally at either

    'The Book of Lost things'

    or

'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'

Most popular vore by end of day Monday gets to be our book 1!

Anyone with availability information on these?

Preference for book 1? 14 votes

The Book Of Lost Things seems strangely similar in plot to Pan's Labyrinth, no?

I've read The Book of Lost Things, so I'm not going to vote . . . but I just wanted to express my interest in TLL Book Club; I'll read either!

I'd be all up for this, I love reading John Connolly, and have read lots of his books, especially the Charlie Parker related ones :D

I hadn't heard of 'The Book of Lost Things' before the previous thread but I know I am definitely going to read it whether it wins the poll or not - I think it sounds really good :)

    Neck and neck!

So what happens when we read it.. do we each review it or just compare thoughts??

Book of ost things is fab, loved it when I read it first, a bit strange but great.

Has there been a final decision on a book yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭Thumpette

I think we were saying we would get votes till the end of today. :)

Does anyone have experience of book clubs and can maybe suggest how we could structure this?

Should we maybe break it into pieces and discuss sections after we had read it? Or should we wait until everyone has finished the whole book and then discuss?

    Thanks :)

i know that jodi picoult's website has a book club question list, as did the thousand splendid suns. i guess it just guides book clubbers for discussion.
i've looked at Stieg's site, but I can't find a list, although i note a few others are looking for suggestions as well

If it's not too much to ask would it be possible to give a tip off as to what section in the shop that the chosen book can likely be found in eg Fiction, Non-Fiction, New Releases, Classics that sort of thing? So when you go to buy it your not walking around like a lost cause trying to find it. Maybe if someone already has the book they can give a rough idea as to where it can be found.

I just wanted to say I am interested in this book club too, but didn't vote as I'll read either :D

I think both would be under Fiction, although The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo might still be a new release/on the tables marked New Fiction.

I know itunes have The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on audiobook - but don't worry im not going to cheat - i will actually read the book, i promise....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 599 ✭✭✭jinxycat

They're both under fiction a -z. I was in Easons the other day and had to buy The Book of Lost Things as it was the last one, also buying the other tomorrow when i'm in town. THey both look interesting.

By the way that's Easons in Navan, i'm sure it'll be the same in the others.

It's a tight run thing but the Book of Lost things is the winner.

Any ideas now on how we do this? :)

Are we now gonna need another poll to find out how long it will take people to read the book? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 428 ✭✭ciagr297

    i found this article online
    http://bestsellers.suite101.com/article.cfm/setting_up_a_book_club
just having a read through to see if its useful

Well, why don't we first set a start date of sorts, so that we can all have time to go out and get the book?

Maybe in a week or so?

What about an end-date? I presume we are not going to discuss before that, or it would be spoiler tags a go-go :D

Would most people have read it by the end of the month? Middle of September?

I've not bought it yet, but a check on Amazon tells me it's about 500 pages.

Dont' get scared people, I think that's the paperback . . . hardcover is ~350 pages.

Hey all Im interested and I'll read either book, sounds fun!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,383 ✭✭✭emeraldstar

I've never done it but on another forum I visit they do Group Reads where they discuss the book chapter by chapter. Could be an option? Then it means you can begin almost immediately if you want as you won't have to wait for people to finish, and you won't be trying to rush your way through the whole thing by a certain date if you're particularly busy at that time or whatever. Something like that? Or perhaps in groups of Chapters, say 1-5 first time, then 6-10, etc. I dunno, just a suggestion :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭Goolay

i think it would work well broken into chapters or sections as well :)

Eh sorry, I wasn't looking to scare people at all! :o Just an idea of the size.

I tried 3 bookshops in Cork yesterday and couldn't get the book. Must be popular.

Is the book of Lost things broken up into sections too? i'll have to check when I go home.

righto, so we have the first book selected

proposed first meeting middle sept....any more feedback on this?

where should we meet? was this already discussed? maybe a big Insomnia (like the one on camden st) or starbucks (top of harcourt st)..and i reckon we'd need to know how many to expect as well

could be an idea to have two people lead up the first meeting, then we can rotate the organisation of each meetup....what'dya reckon?

If we're going to do it in sections (which I think is a great idea), I'd propose that we start the first week in September -- that'll give everyone time to get/order/borrow(/steal?!) the book, and get through the first few chapters (without us losing any momentum).

I was under the impression that it was a virtual book club; that we'd discuss online so that everyone can participate, regardless of location. Am I wrong?

Well I would prefer a thread, because I can't make a regular meet.

ok, my bad. in the first couple of posts i picked up that it was a meetup....anywhoodles
should we have a sticky thread for this?
and having it in sections is good for me too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭Thumpette

Sorry- mad day not been online! Yeah i think the plan was we do the discussions online here, save it from turning into another Dublin focused thing anyway- if thats ok with everyone....

So are we saying mid Sept to have it finished?

Sounds like we have some support for breaking it up a bit, although I think chapter by chapter might be a bit too slow . . . so what if we just did half of the book by say, the last of August, and then the rest a couple of weeks after that?

Sorry, been out of commission for the past week so I'm only seeing this now.

    Either book would've been great.

I don't know, but I think it might be a better idea to read the whole book before the first discussion. Some people have already read the book, others will read at different paces. I, for one, hate people ruining books for me, and I don't fancy a thread full of spoiler tags as that ruins the flow somewhat. Just my 2¢.

Has there been an official date set for this yet?

Maybe we should see if everyone has gotten the book first before we set one if it hasn't been set yet!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,150 ✭✭✭✭Malari

I've got mine this morning! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭Thumpette

I think blush probably has a point about spoilers, different paces etc. How about we set a date of October 1st to begin discussing the whole book?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 599 ✭✭✭jinxycat

    That's cool with me!!
