Away Goals - Is it better to play your home game first or second?

With the recent Champions League qualifying draw i was wondering if having your home game first is a better advantage in terms of away goals as you get the extra 30 mins if the game goes into extra-time.

What are people's thoughts on this?

Which is more of an advantage when dealing with Away Goals rule? 43 votes

Home Game Second - better to have the advantage of home support in second game.

Home Game Second - better to have the advantage of home support in second game.
while the general opinion is that it is better to play the first leg away, i prefer having the second leg away. Puts all the pressure on the home side if they didn't get a goal in the first leg.

When United drew away in Barcelona people were saying it was a good result but by god were those last 20minutes at OT horrible to endure.

The second leg home team has more than a 50% probability to qualify for the next round

    i don't get that.

If they draw the first game 0-0 away, only a win will do them in the second leg, a score draw sees them go out.

I prefer to see Liverpool play the away leg first as its a case of knowing they need to go and try get a goal to bring into the second leg. Aswell as this, when the knockout stages occur so does the possibility of extra time and peno's. I think home advantage can be a big factor in deciding the outcome of fixtures in these circumstances.

I always thought 0-0 draw at home in the first leg was a much under-rated result but seemingly during the champions league era the team that are home in 2nd leg go through 70 odd% of the time after 0-0 in the first.

I've spent 15 minutes going through CL results in wikipedia.

The numbers on the left are the winning teams that played home games 1st.
Seedings don't affect the home/away draw until the Last 16 but by then you'd think the 2 group qualifiers will be strong enough.

    Away leg first.

If you get a bad result away, you can console yourself with the support/home factor for next leg.

If you get a good away result, or goal(s), the oppo are under more pressure when they come to yours.

How many of those were won due to away goals during extra time?

    Home-game second.

if you have a poor result, you have a chance to turn it around with your fans behind you.

If you draw 0-0 away first, you just have to back yourself to win a game in front of your home fans.

If you have a great result, you shouldn't get turned over at home.

I feel, as a United fan, Home game 2nd.

Go away and lose - Fans get right behind the team from the off, all or nothing.

Go away and draw - If you dont lose in their back yard, youve got a good chance of winning in yours.

Go away and win - You just won away, finish the job at home.

I know it should be the case for most Liverpool fans aswell, feeling they can overturn any defecit at Anfield. Same goes for Celtic.

Yeah I would have thought that home game second is an advantage and eirebhoy's numbers seem to back it up. That looks like quite a signifcant difference.
