Free Weights or Machine Weights?

I've only ever used machine weights but my friend has said that after a few weeks of machine weights to 'warm up' if you will, he started free weights and found them to be better so I'm just wondering does it make a difference? I use weights specifically for rugby if that makes a difference.

definetly free weights as they bring other thins into play whereas machine are just isolated movements but its cool to mix the two
