Is extra time a new match or not?

Right, the Roscommon v. Kerry minor QF brought this old chestnut of the GAA back to the fore. Is extra-time in GAA a continuation of the original match or is it a new match?

For example, a team that loses a player to a red-card can start extra-time with a full compliment of 15. (But can they re-start the man that got sent off?) Also a change to the team made between full-time and extra-time doesn't count as a substitute as it's a change made between two different matches. BUT if a player picks up a yellow card in regular-time and then picks up a second in extra-time, (s)he will get sent off.

So, is extra-time a new match or what?

definitely can't start the guy that got sent off unless the rules have changed since 2003 because during that season roscommon had a man sent off in normal time versus offaly and kildare and both were not allowed back for the extra time

It is not classified as a new match. The fact that the scores are not reset at 0-0 to 0-0 is the clearest indicator of that.

Any amount of sustitutions may be made in the interval between normal time and extra time as long as the players have been named in the original list or list of substitutes. These changes are not included as part of the three substitutions allowed in extra time.

Here are the rules that should clear up any doubts about extra time.

    Rule 2.4

(ii) For extra time, a further three substitutions
shall be allowed. A player ordered off, in any
circumstance, during the drawn game, may
not play in extra time but may be replaced.

Rule 1.2 Duties of the referee

    (x) (a) To caution a player who commits a
    cautionable foul/infraction, by taking his
name and showing him a yellow card,
which caution, unless (b) or (c) below has
been applied, shall carry over into extra-time,
    where played.

    (b) To order off a player who commits a
    second cautionable foul/infraction, by
showing him a second yellow card,
followed by showing him a red card.

    (c) To order off a player who commits an
ordering off foul/infraction by taking his
name (if not already taken) and showing
    him a red card.

    Hope this clears things up

It happened this year when Wicklow went to extra time with Westmeath. As far as I know Pat McWalter got sent off in normal time, but in extra time they were back to 15-a-side. I think they had to bring on a new man for him, not sure though!

yeah, it's one of the two ways Micko brings on a sub, the other is for a broken bone.... but where would we be without him....

It should be considered part of the same match. The score doesn't revert to zero like in a replay. So there should be no returning to full numbers if red cards have been issued. Maybe you could allow one additional sub, but no more.

On the subject of draws, do you ever notice that when it comes to the amount of times that teams are level in a match that commentators can't count? They never include the two teams being level at the throw-in. So if one teams scores the first point and the other team scores the next, they'll tell you they are level for the "first" time. You can say that being level at the start before anyone scores doesn't count, but then if there was no score in the entire match, are you saying it would not be a draw? So it does count, but the commentators can't.
