Sorry if this has been posted befoer but I had a scan through the forum and couldn't find the right answer..

My girlfriend is unemployed now for 7 weeks and has her P45 etc...We have heard that it's possible to claim back tax paid for the calender year.

Does anybody know if that is correct? Does someone have ti be unemplyed a certain time for this to happen?

What happens if she gets a job next month, does she then have to pay back the tax again?

    Thanks

    Hi

You need to file a form p50 one month after you sign on and you will get a tax refund for that months tax credits. You will also get a revised p45 document which you can produce to your next employer when you take up work again.

if you tell your gf to go visit her local tax office with her p45 they should sort her out.

I just did this recently, send parts 2 and 3 of the P45 along with the P50 form and submit it to your local tax office - I got a refund about 2 weeks later.
take note though, they won't send you back your P45, at least thats what some snotty cow from the revenue "help"line told my boyfriend - they did send a copy out, but make sure you don't need your P45 for anything else before you send it!

You can go to http://www.irishtaxcalculator.com it has a tax refund calculator that estimates your tax refund if you are unemployed.
