15 minutes to download a few emails and speedtest.net wont even load so I can't test how bad it is. I would say i am running at slower than dialup speed right now.

Since Friday I was downloading at 125 - half the upload speed. When I rang eircom the advisor on the other end tried to convince me it was my filter/splitter. I just happened to have an unused one sitting about and the filter was not the problem. These eircom reps are getting about as usefull as dells.

    Hi,

yes, the same for me. My upload is great (350k) but my download hovers around 30k (through Smart Telecom's speed tester). If I try to download one of the large files from ftp.esat.net (so on BT's own network) my transfer rate is as low as 226 bytes per second, and then eventually times out!

The BT rep said he'd never seen it so slow. They made me go through all the usual rubbish of getting rid of wireless, changing cable, changing splitter, turning off my windows firewall. He wanted to know what was in my task list etc. I hate it when they basically go "is it plugged in sir" when you obviously know what you're talking about. I told them from the start it was a problem outside as nothing has changed here for two years. I had previosuly got the BT box set up in bridged mode and was using PPPoE from my wireless router. Now I have my laptop plugged directly into the BT box via ethernet (not wireless) and it's just as slow.

I've tried it with multiple computers and the same thing. Like yourself, I can't successfully load to speedtest.net.

Interestingly, my pings to BT's gateway are around 32ms so OK there (although they do time out now and again, but that could just be the reply), and like I said my upload is around 350k. I'd be interested to know if yours is similar. Try speedtest.smarttelecom.ie.

My modem is syncing at 3072k, so fine.

I suppose it's no surpsrise that I'm having these issues and I'm on BT, as that exchange is not unbundled so it's all over Eircom infrastructure anyway.

Anyway, just thought I'd let you know you're not the only ones. Monasterevin is too small a place for this to be a coincidence i.e. I don't for one second believe we've all messed up something in our individual houses exactly at the same time!

Here's hoping they get the finger out and sort this out asap.

    Eoghan.

I could not download speedtest.net so found speedtest at internet frog that gave me a download speeed of 20.3 kbps and upload at 300kbps.

Got on to eircom again and they did this and that and finally said the problem is with my computer. Problem is that when I plug any computer into the dsl cable I get the same result.

Tried changing the DNS settings as suggested by others elsewhere but this had no effect.

Your situation seems exactly the same as mine. BT told me there were no other reported issues with dsl in the Monasterevin area today, so I've alerted them to this thread.

Makes you wish we had UPC or Smart in Monasterevin. A friend of mine lives in Naas and has 24MB from UPC. I had Smart BB before (not in Monasterevin unfortunately) and were never any problems as Smart had their own network. I also had UPC (NTL) at the time and it was great.

BT told me today my line could handle up to 7 megs. That's nice to know, but the exchange hasn't been unbundled yet, so while some BT users can get 7 megs, we just get 3 (but we pay the same).

Well, in theory we just get 3. Today I'm getting 226 bytes per second!

I also spoke to a few eircom users in the town and they too are having issues.
When i asked did they report it they said no :( as usual people just sit and wait till its sorted, please make the call people.

In 07 i had a 5 month battle with eircom, you wont believe what i had to go through to get it sorted.
I just hope this is a small hiccup and i dont have to go to such extremes again.
    See this thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055048304&highlight=Eircom+nightmare

Since then my connection has been fine except for the odd usual crappy eircom dns issues.

eoghanoh BT telling you the exchange is not 7mb ready is telling you porkies.
I had 7meg last year but got rid of it as latency was a joke so as advised by many threads on here at the time i went back to 3meg and havent looked back until today.

Nothing will be done unless enough people make noise, i know this first hand.

    Hello Eoghan,

I am trying to download the test at smart telecom. The way it's going I might as well sit down to tea while I am waiting.

It would be nice if the regulator would make theses ISP's pay a penalty to their customers for not meeting service standards. Limiting public utility companies gearing and dividends as they do in some parts of the US would help. My gut tells me that our internet infrastructure is so poor because the boyz let the fat cat financiers bleed eircom dry with the leveraged buyout con.

Maybe not relevant to thread but I had absolutely no connection from about 3 o clock til fifteen minutes ago in wexford. Eircom said there was an outage and they were working on it.

I'm in Gorey and with BT - but Eircom lines, exchange etc. Response times are very slow. I'm on an 8mb connection and have tested on speedtest.net:

To the Galway, Limerick servers i'm getting a ping of 61ms and download 3.5mb - round about usual

To the Dublin, Cork servers i'm getting a ping of 119ms and download 0.6mb!!

Something not right with them results and they are pretty consistant.

I'm in Monasterevin too. 7meg BT connection. Only getting dial up like speeds. I though at first my connection was throttled or something, but then I (eventually!!) stumbled across this thread.

So a good few cases of slow connections on Eircom & BT. Coincidence, I don't think so...

Cmar-Ireland please ring and complain to ericom like i done today.
The more callers the more likely they will recognise a fault.

I received a no valid license message from smart telecom so I assume I need an account to access the service.

I did another test with internet frog which gave a 3.8 kbps download speed - not a pulse really. Download speeds are so slow hardly any pages will load.

I don't know if this could have anything to do with the local problem in Monasterevin but they have replaced telephone poles out the portarlington and ballagh roads. Some weeks back, I asked one of the service men what they were doing and he said they were upgrading for the internet. I asked further if they were replacing the wire with fibre optic and he said no just replacing with more copper. Maybe they are at the point that they are adding the new area to the broadband network and ended up banjaxing the whole local internet exchange.

Hopefully things will be better in the am.

Just rang BT. The fella on the phone hadn't any other reported faults. he said he will report the fault to Eircom as he thinks it's exchange related. He took my number and will call back with an update.

I'm in Monasterevin too on 7mb with BT. Speeds today have been brutal, pages can take minutes to load. Does seem to be an exchange issue

Morning, speeds still slow today. I was at least able to load the speedtest.net page which is at least an improvement but the speed still is not functional.

It's tiny bit better this morning but not much. I've checked m brother's link, he is also BT and he says it as been slow the last few days. Here are the results.

    534474616.png

BT insist they have to send me a new modem to follow toubleshooting steps. I wonder if Paddy Power will take bets on whether or not it's the router? I know which way I'd bet so I'd make a lot of money!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭Cmar-Ireland

The BT guy I spoke to didn't bother asking the questions about router, filter, etc etc. I told him it was working fine the day before and started acting up yesterday. I told him my equipment was fine and hadn't changed in months and he was happy with that.
He seemed to think it is wxchange related.

I sent him the lnk to this thread as well.

I am just off the phone from Eircom and they are blaming a faulty port at the Exchange. Problem is they wont sent anybody to fix it till Monday. Just ringing them back now to alert them to all of the issues ye are having.

Ok so it seems it's an admitted eircom fault.
Wonder what the chances of a goodwill gesture from Eircom/BT are?

    Edit:

I've emailed BT customer care asking about this and if any gesture will be given.

    Let see what happens !!!

A goodwill gesture for me would be to have it fixed a lot sooner than Monday!

I may have spoken too soon. Still seems to be dodgy. Up and down like a yoyo the last few hours. Still, in general it seems to be going in the right direction.

    Not bad here on BT.

Thanks for that cmar. The problem must be exclusive to eircom then. I was away all day and the performance has improved but still not the best:
