I have been offered a factory unlocked 3gs for 750 euro.

However, i just recently bought an 02 locked one for 519, should i sell it and pay the extra for a factory unlocked?

I sold my brothers iphone 3GS recently (02 locked, basically new- was never used) for 500 euro, going by what he got for his, i think I could get 450 for mine, maybe 475(its not as new as his was and has been used for 3 weeks)...

is it worth it? I may be able to get it for 700..

Are you going to use it yourself, and for how long? If you're planning to use it until, say, the next gen iPhone comes out I wouldn't think having a factory unlocked one is worth the difference.

The only thing is you won't be able to apply the OS updates until the dev teams unlock them. (And of course you'll then have to do the unlock).

Lastly I can't see you getting the initial price difference back if you sell it on in 10-11 months.

    My 2 cents!

yeah i was thinking the same , kinda. I really want a factory unlocked 1 but i dont think i can justify all the extra cash..ill see if i can get the price down on the unlocked one and take it from there.

id imagine if i kept it in pristine condition, in 10 months time i should get about 450-475 for it?

You can update as soon as updates are out.
Your warranty is intact if anything goes wrong.

They are the only 2 reasons i can think of. Whereas with your jailbreak and unlocked phone you have those 2 problems but all the extras that come with cydia. So i dont think its worth it.

Id say just capture those files you will need to update the iphone in the future and stay with the phone you have.

Before you buy a factory unlocked.. remember this.. the warranty only applies in the country you bought it..'apparently'.

I was about to get a friend to buy one in New Zealand but having read online including the apple support forums, warranty only applies in the country you bought it in. You could always ring mactivate to verify this though.

I just bought an o2 one instead and jailbroke it. I can do a full restore if needed.

BTW a factory unlocked one in New Zealand which can be bought from apple itself and works out as the exact same price as it is on o2 pre-pay.

i got mine factory unlocked from the italian apple webstore. friend who lives in italy ordered it on his ccard. it was shipped from CORK to italy, he sent it to me.
i unpacked it, shoved in a voda card and connected to itunes.
30 seconds later i got message " congrats, your new iphone is unocked " !

then did an update from 3.0 to 3.0.1 ...this took about 10 mins. it then re-booted and i sync'd my content.

loaded up some ringtones, wallpaper and sync again. Happy happy days

All for E599 to my door.

only caveat is the handbook is in italian :(

no, you can unlock it with software, no need to get a legally unlocked one

I work in O2 and I've played with the demo - cant say it particuarly impressed me. Nothing connects to it via cable or bluetooth that apple haven't multiplied the reasonable price for by a factor of five.. You'd have to go on a decent bill plan with any of the companies with a decent data allowance for it to be useful, add that to €750 and it's nothing short of loopy to fork that out on a phone.

All company bias aside tbph - get an o2 clear sim for €20 a month and stick that in with a 1GB data addon. 35 squids a month and you'll get a decent amount of free calls etc with it.

    no, yes, and perhaps

the factory unlocked version is ALWAWS preferable to a jailbreak hit.

cause the factory unlocked version, will always stand up to an "official " "upgrade "

your "jailbreak Carry-on " simply plays catch -up to Apple Inc !

    pityfull folly TBH.

    next?

oh, by the way, Apple Inc next move is to require ALL Baseband firmware to be validted via iTunes!

their next move will involve baseband validtion BEFORE all else........they are about to encrypt the baseband code, with server based authentication , ........lets see how long it takes to hack a 128 bit , code , and get the server to ack!!!! back to your ISP address !

    Ps
for whats its worth, Apple Inc,are about to incorporate the SKY encryption model, across ALL , yes ALL , their addressable devices !
    Watch this space !
Apple ARE on the case, believe me, i KNOW

    (c) Sky News MMIX

    and YES
the unlocked italian iPhone, cods them all !!!

what exactly does this mean for people using a jailbroken/unlocked 3GS?

not that I'm too worried..got my self an officially unlocked one now..600 quid.
