BOOT MGR missing?

A friends computer wont boot the msg that comes up is Boot mgr is missing. I have put a recovery cd into the dvd drive and I cant get the computer to boot from the cd/dvd drive.

Tried the only option available on the computer which was press F2 and configure the boot option to boot from the cd drive. Nothing happens i.e. the computer goes through the same process of starting up and brings up the same msg of mgr is missing press cntrl alt delete to restart.

I have tested the recovery cd on another computer and it works ok. Just confused as to why I can't access this recovery cd on said computer?

Any tips and advice on this would be most helpful as the owners of the computer cannot really afford to pay out cash to a shop to get it fixed.

Thanks for any help or replies on this.

Ps I tried F8 and other shortcuts on start up to access repair options and this doesn't work, it is as if they don't exist as an option.

I have an OS disk for my own computer. Would it be worth trying that?
