A 15 minute high intensity cycle or a 45 minute moderate intensity walk. Which is better if trying to lose weight and tone up? I'm hearing conflicting opinions?

do you have a heart rate monitor?? the 15 minutes would only be better if it was very hight intensity e.g. balls to the wall for 60 sec followed by 120 sec active recovery + repeat

Kind of what I'm doing at the moment although the cycle does save a bit of time

    This is gonna be controversial...

I dunno if most people have what it takes to push HIIT hard enough so that it is more beneficial than LIT. Not directed at the OP.

It REALLY fcuking hurts, that's something I've noticed recently, and it just gets harder the more you do it. I've had great results from it, but hate every single second of it. Even the recovery.

If ya can push yourself that hard you'll see amazing results.

very true .. sometimes I just do a 50 minute moderate run if I cant fact 20 mins of HIIT - the trade off for having your cardio out of the way in so little time is that your going to feel like **** while doing it!! having said that, most people can create their own interval type training thats somewhere in between true HIITand slower steady state ...

I have found that after weights medium intensity is the way to go.
If you are going to try HIIT aim for 20 minutes, but in reality you will probably only last 10 - 15 minutes as you start out.

If you're starting off I'd say which ever you are most likely to keep up.

    i hate HIIT.

I generally prefer to do my own intervals for 30min on a spin bike than doing half that time HIIT or go out for a 45 min run rather than HIIT!!

Do people do HIIT on threadmill? If so what speed do you go for when going all out?

Just to clarify: I know that this exercise on its own is not gonna make much of a difference. I'm changing my diet & going back to the gym which will hopefully make the difference but just as an added bonus I wondered which of these might be better.

It's my commute to work. I work 12 hour shifts so I find it difficult to fit the gym in on those days, and as I spend most of the 12 hours sitting on my arse I figure that the commute is a good way to get some sort of activity into my working days.

I used to be grand when I did a 9 to 5. Was in a routine and started getting into really good shape, but since starting the shift work I'm finding it really difficult and have put on loads of weight.

Granted Ive just started out but I try to do 16.5kph on a 2.5% incline for 45sec and then rest for 1.30, the rest (6kph) can be up to 2min if my legs are feeling crappy, prefer the bike (keeping it over 120rpm for the same time) though cause Im not that easy on my feet at that speed and Ive come close to flying off the back a few times

I tend to do as long as i can keep up for one minute and rest for one minute.
The reason for that is, i find it takes a few seconds for the machine to get up to speed.
I aim for about 14.5 - 15kmph on an incline of about 5. I always try and do more each time, so my top level is being pushed at all times.

I suppose the ultimate goal is to be going like Drago was in Rocky 4. 80% Vertical at top speed :pac:
