Ive copied them onto the ps3 hard drive as well but it wont work. Still comes up as corrupted data, anyone know what the problem is?

OK, this might sound a little bit technical but here goes:

AVI files are just a file type or container in the same way a zip file is a container with any type of file in it.

The PS3 will only play AVI encoded with DivX 3.11 encoder or > Divx 5 encoder. It will not play AVI encoded using XviD codec using custom encoding presets (only DivX compatible ones).
You need to download a program called GSpot codec and check the audio & video encoding types.

or stream the files with google code ps3 media server, it will automatically covert them over the air via the transcode option!

This is always the answer given even when its not the question asked.

dude have you put them into a folder?

You know that you have to put your avi's into a folder called MOVIE on your stick/harddrive. Then on the home screen highlight the memory stick and press triangle and display all. You can play them from there.

Sorry if this isent what your asking but took me a while to figure out how to play them

You don't need to have them in a folder. If you go to your USB key in the Video section and press Triangle and then Display All, your videos will show up.

The problem OP is having is that the video's he's trying to watch are encoded in a codec that the PS3 doesn't support.

you will have to re encode them i would imagine. How many movies are like this? Usually 9 out of 10 movies have the correct encoding in my experience.

PS3Video9 will convert them for you but it will be slow unless you have an uber puter.

You could use PSPVideo9 which will be quicker. The results are almost the same for much quicker convert times.

I couldn't get this to work (Ubuntu)

I installed the server with no problems on my laptop but it just said "cannot find PS£ - Is it on?". I followed a few guides but with no luck. Can someone tell me what way the hardware should be arranged?

Make sure that you are NAT2 [preferred] or NAT3. It won't work on NAT1.

I've never used this media streamer before but generally the PS3 finds the Media server, not the other way around.

Have a look on the Video XMB for your "Media Server".

Yeah I searched for the media server but it wasn't found. I assume I check which NAT I am on my router?

I have my PS3 connected to the router via cable and my laptop via wireless. It should work like this right?

No - on PS3. Go to network settings and check the network details.

yeah - but depends on the NAT type of your PS3. If using NAT1 it means your bypassing the router so you can't connect to the media server.

You also need to turn on the find media server option in the Network settings on the PS3. Can't remember what the exact text is.

That is strange - RangeR is spot on - usually it's the PS3 finds them. I've never used the google media server as it requires a display to be running at all times, which kindof defeats the purpose IMHO - why have a PC and PS3 running display if you could just watch on the PC anyways...

    Also consider http://mediatomb.cc/
It's not catered directly for PS3 but in many ways beats the google one hands down.

    Hey.

Thanks for the replies, I will try some stuff when i get home tonight. I actually have another script to make the google media server run without a display so no problem there really.

I will let you know how it goes.

I've never not been able to play .avi files

If they are on your computer, put them on a usb memory stick. Put this into one of the front usb ports on ps3. On xmb menu, go to video, then usb device(-flash) and press "triangle" and choose display all. It should appear then.

At the usb device(-flash) stage if you just press "x" it will say no files found.

Hope that helps... That's what I do and have never had a problem!!!:D

There are avi files that don't work on a PS3.

Fair enough. Try ANY xVid format avi. It WON'T play.
Or ANY DivX avi encoded in DivX greater than 3.11. Won't play either.

How do you check how they were encoded?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭DemoniK

get gspot on the PC and it'll tell your the codecs...
actually it will play xvid - it's just a lot of AVIs out there don't properly index the audio and this causes an issue. divx (that is .divx file extension) files on the other hand do have them.

    Howyas,

I got the google media server working and have avi's streaming away although for 1 avi I still get unsupported data (details below). I also have some mp4s but they are unwatchable because they just start and stop every second. Kinda like youtube on a terrible connection. Anyone know why this is? Is there a problem with mp4s or something? Is it the media server I have?

Here are the avi that wouldn't play's details that I could get:

    Video
    Dimensions: 544 x 288
    Codec: DivX MPEG-4 Version 5
    Framerate: 24 frames per second
    Bitrate: n/a

    Thanks in advance.
