Rover type Diff Rebuilding?

    Lads ('n' lasses....I know there's a couple of ye!),

I'm having a bit of bother with the rear diff in the landrover, and I might need to have someone rebuild it if my own attempt fails tomorrow. The pinion bearing has run dry, either causing or as a consequence of the pinion oil seal leaking my lovely new EP80 all over the diff casing.

I could just buy a second-hand one, and throw that in, but it might end up failing again in a matter of weeks or months. I'd rather do the job now and do it right..... Anyway, if it all goes arse up, can anyone recommend an old school mechanic or engineering shop near South Dublin/North Wicklow who could throw this together the right way? A recon exchange from the UK is just too much with the two way shipping charge, so I need someone who can actually do the job right locally.

    Ta in advance,

    Gil

Have you got the manual that describes how to set one up? It's not straightforward and assumes your crownwheel and pinion aren't worn.

TBH I wouldn't bother and just slap another one in, they don't often go wrong provided the seal doesn't go or pinion nut work loose. Replace seal and fit new nut before fitting.

You'll find plenty s/h offered if you ask on the Ireland section on LRA http://www.landroveraddict.com/smf/index.php?board=41.0

Thanks for the pointers Sean, but I specifically want this one rebuilt. I'm happy enough to give it a go, and if push comes to shove, I'll pay someone to rebuild it for me instead. Swapping in another one isn't worth the hassle - They'll all let go sooner or later with a lift and the tyres I'm running. At least if this one is done, I'll know it, rather than having another leak and shot bearing in weeks or months with a secondhand unit.

    Ta,

    Gil

    Hiya Gil Dub,
Firstly diff oil should be EP90,
    Check out this link,
You'll have to download the PDF
but it should help with the diff rebuild.(pages 1-10)
