So I'm headed off to college in September and I'm looking for a laptop. I want to be able to watch movies, play music and do some light gaming(WOW and Football Manager would suffice) and I want to to last a few years(2 at least)

My budget is roughly around the €500 mark, I could probably stretch to the €600 if needed.

So far I've found a refurbished Toshiba Satellite Pro A300-257 for around the €450 mark. Its specs are

    • Processor: Intel® Pentium® dual-core T3400 (2.16GHz)
    • RAM: 2GB
    • Hard Drive: 160GB
    • Operating System: Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition
    • Screen: 15.4” TruBrite® WXGA TFT High Brightness display
    • Optical Drive: DVD-SM Drive
    • Graphics: ATI Mobility™ Radeon® HD3470-256MB
    • Bluetooth: No
    • Notebook Camera: Integrated VGA Web Camera
    • Warranty: 3 Month warranty
It seems good to be besides the 3 month warrenty and the graphics card should meet my needs. Should I go for this or can I find something better out there? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For €600 you can get a Dell Studio 15 (15.6") with ATI 4570, there's €275 off it at the moment. In terms of gaming, that 4570 is a decent bit better then the 3470...probably nearly twice as fast going by some benches.

I wouldn't call it an amazing machine or anything, but for €600 its alright. Its got a nice LED-backlit screen, and decent all-round specs, mostly the same or higher than the Toshiba. 4GB ram, 320GB HDD, T4200 dual-core. Plus you're getting a new machine with a years warranty. I reckon all-in-all, it'd be worth putting up the extra €150 over the Toshiba you've listed.

Its also Win7 upgrade-eligible, which is a nice improvement over Vista.

Not that you really need a dedicated option to play WoW. Still, never hurts to have. Just be advised, Dedicated GPUs will eat your model's proposed Battery Life. Usually though thats not a problem. Youll find yourself near a power plug at college 95% of the time. And even a low range dedi-GPU option today will get you through Crysis, begrudgingly. So performance in that regard, is not an issue either. The only factor tbh is your budget - because like I said, if all you wanna play is Wow, opting out of a GPU can save you ~100 off the price of your laptop.
